Why Hello There PlayStation 3

I finally caved and a bought a PlayStation 3. Why'd it take so long and why did I finally do it?

Yesterday I joined in on Sony's newest generation of consoles when I bought a PlayStation 3. As some of you might know (if you listen to the podcast), I have not been a part of the Sony-buying public since the PlayStation 2. That changed last night.

The genesis of this goes back a few years to early 2006. "Hey," I said. "I should buy all three consoles at launch this generation."

It was a nice thought, until E3 2006 rolled around and "Five Hundred Ninety Nine U.S. Dollars" was said. For just the system, I could have (and did) bought a Wii, another set of controllers, and three or more games. So I passed then.

Then I almost caved with Metal Gear Solid 4. However, the money was still a huge barrier for me. I wasn't going to spend that much on a system, especially when it was just for a few exclusives. I also almost caved with Noby Noby Boy, although that's squarely Lauren's fault.

And then the deal came into place. You see, Lauren really wanted me to propose to her for about a year before I finally got my shit together and did. So we came up with some sort of deal that revolved around us buying a PlayStation 3 after the proposal. This all seems kind of backhanded and forcing the issue, but it really wasn't. I think the fact that I waited four months after I proposed to her to buy a PS3 shows that.

At Gamescom 2009, Sony revealed the fabled PS3 Slim and the price drop. I knew my days of avoiding Sony's Blu-ray behemoth were numbered.

That catches us up to speed, I think. The final push over the edge were some gift cards and Lauren badly wanting Little Big Planet. I'd say it was worth it so far. Little Big Planet is awesome and there's a lot of games I need to catch up on.

In the end, the price was right and there were enough games that caught my fancy. I regret nothing.

Sadly, I simply can't justify buying a PS3 until they add Netflix streaming.

There are a fair bit of games I want to play--especially since I don't own a 360--but since I already lack the time to play all the Wii and DS games I want to try the added games aren't a huge factor for me. It's the other features that will eventually sell me a PS3.

I'm definitely digging stuff like Little Big Planet and the old Ratchet and Clank. Also, the downloadable stuff is pretty awesome, especially Noby Noby Boy and PixelJunk Eden.

I'll admit that one of the other reasons that pushed me was that I no longer work for a Nintendo-exclusive site.

Little Big Planet is indeed a great game.
