Space Invaders Infinity Gene! (so good)

This is a game you should play. Why? Because it's fun, that's why! It's one of those upgraded retro games like Pac-Man Championship Edition. The gameplay is more like Galaga in that you're shooting aliens that fly across the screen. I bought and played the Playstation Network version for $10 and had a really good time.

Firstly, you'll notice that the graphics have a distinctly retro feel to them. Instead of redesigning everything, they took the core aesthetic feel and gave it a shot of steroids. It starts off like this:

And goes to stuff like this:

Each stage you complete turns the game more into a shoot-'em-up. The enemy formations are varied and fly across the screen at regular intervals, so you don't have to kill everything in order to survive. And you are moving ever so forward towards the boss. A couple of them are even larger than the screen. The game isn't so much a bullet hell game in that you are overwhelmed because most times, you are safe at the bottom of the screen. Although you will do your fair share of dodging. Plus, the game gets into a sort of pseudo 3D play towards the end.

I think what I like most about it is unlocking new ships and trying them out. There are 10 in total, from standard shots to gravity bombs and laser ships. They really do change how you play though each stage. You also get upgrades from the UFO's, so your weapons can become more powerful. The thing with the unlockables is that the more points you get, you "level up" (evolve) and unlock more stuff like extra lives and background music to use. There are 30 stages in the Normal Mode. Also, there are other modes. One is a Challenge Mode which gives you random stages. Another is a Music Mode, where you play a stage which uses a track stored on your hard drive. It's pretty challenging to try to clear those because they throw a lot of stuff at you, and you have to survive for the duration of the song. Speaking of the music, the soundtrack is really good. It's gets into all sorts of techno and electronica. Overall, I don't like Schmups all that much, but this game is really cool. The game can be hard sometimes, but it's never unfair. Definitely give the demo a try to see if you like it.

I reviewed Infinity Gene a few years ago.  As far as Space Invaders updates go, I really prefer Space Invaders Extreme.  Taito is awesome.

Cool. I'll have to try that game out, too.

Wow... Those screenshots...

This game looks like it'll cause anxiety, stroke, and erectile dysfunction all in one sitting.. lol

It's not that bad lol. Certainly not Ikaruga tough. More like a shoot-em-up Light. It does get a bit trippy at times, but not as much to mess with your mind.

I loved Pac Man DX or whatever it was called. I tried the Galaga one and thought it was cool too. I'm gonna download the demo of this soon. It looks like it'd be hell lol.

Me too. That was a really good one! I haven't tried the Galaga one. Maybe I will soon. I had played the demo for this game a while ago, but was on the fence about it. I'm glad I decided to get it after all.

Freaky! It might give me seizures....but I want it! I always kicked butt at Space Invaders when I played it in arcades. For ten bucks on PSN what is not to like? Looks cool.

Nah, it doesn't have any flashing lights, so you should be good. lol

Yeah, I was trying to find a gigantic UFO pic, but I think that one fit better!

I reviewed this one back when it came out. A lot of a fun, a solid game for a geat price. If you like Shoot-'em-ups, this is probably one worth considering, particularly because of all the different ships. I'll be mentioning this on the next PB & Jason, memory permitting. :)

Cool. I didn't know that the game was so well received! I had a good time with it myself. It's a nice little shooter to just chill with for either 5 minutes at a time or an hour. Has a surprising amount of stages with all the different modes, too.

I'll have to check this out. I wonder if it's on Live, too.
