It's Halloween! You know, that time of year where you dress in skimpy outfits and offer your "tricks and treats" in exchange for "candy." But, if you're a bit less classy, you can also indulge in entertainment of the horror variety. We play video games on this here website, so I guess we better talk about those. Right? Right.

I've wrangled up a list of some horror games that will aid your constipation this Halloween.

BUT FIRST. I should mention that not all of these games are scariest. Some horror is supposed to be more fun than fear-inducing, so some of these games may not be absolute pants-wetters. However, I will order this list in a way that denotes least to most scary games. If you disagree, remember that A) fear is entirely subjective, and B) you aren't wearing any pants.

I'm glad to see Fatal Frame II made the list man! I'm actually doing a Let's Play of that right now on my YouTube channel!

Also; where's the rest of you playing Dark Souls Wrong?
I've been waiting...

Nice, I'll have to have a look!

As for dark souls, I've done the gameplay, but I had some issues with fraps which caused me to lose pretty much all of the video content. I didn't do anything really significant like beat a boss, but I did level up a few times and die a fair bit. I'll be at a significantly higher level next time you see me lol.

What is Fraps?

And I just posted my vids in a blog, easy access. lol

Sweet! I just deleted all of my notifications, since I had like 200 of them. I might have missed it lol. I shall go looking!

---EDIT---

Oh, it's your new blog. Don't worry lol!

Fraps is what I use fore recording. It's a pretty decent recording tool, but it chews up CPU like you wouldn't believe.

How is it that I have only played one of these games to completion?  I must be a terrible terrible person.  Also, how would you know if I am wearing pants or not?  That is a truly horrifying thought.

Firstly, which game is it that you've finished? Secondly, I just know...

Resident Evil 4.  Now I am wanting to fill my internal organs with PANCAKES.

No Costume Quest!? It's about trick-or-treating!

I know, I know, your list is more horror-oriented, but that's such a great Halloween game for obvious reasons.

To be honest, I've never played it. Sell me on this game.

First and foremost, do you like Double Fine (and/or Tim Schafer)? If so, ignore the rest of everything I have to say and just buy the game. If not, please, let me continue.

It's Halloween and you're taking your little brother (or sister) trick-or-treating. See, you're a set of identical twins and based on your character choice, you will be the eldest (by a few seconds). This sets up a pretty humurous backdrop for the sibling interaction going forward during the events of the night.

You set out from your house into a pretty standard neighborhood filled with a bunch of kids all out trick-or-treating. As you go house to house, you either receive candy or discover a Grubbin who's in search of candy. At this point the game switches into an RPG mode that's reminiscent of a Mario RPG-style game.

Your costume determines your abilties in the RPG mode. The art style switches from a cartoony-thing into this ultra-detailed, "realistic" style. As you go through the game you unlock new abilities and can complete different subquests to obtain new costumes and new party members. Furthermore, the costumes actually have different abilities that must be applied during different fights. So it's a bit deeper than just being window-dressing.

An entire plot (that I won't spoil) unfolds that takes you to lots of different areas, but the whole trick-or-treating theme is applied throughout the game, regardless of where you go. It's a humorous romp that doesn't overstay its welcome. By the time the gimmick of it all starts to wear thin, it wraps up.

For more detailed thoughts, feel free to read Chessa's review.

Huh. I've got the game, I bought it in the double fine humble bundle... don't know why I didn't play it. I mistook it for a different game that has a multiplayer focus. I'll definitley have to give it a try!

Enjoy! I was going to play some more Demon's Souls tonight, but I might throw down on Costume Quest now that I got all hyped up talking about it again (after I take my kids trick-or-treating, of course).

Oh, it's also 75% off right now on Steam for their Halloween sale.

Posted on October 31, 2013 4:29 PM

Already spent a fair bit of money, was thinking of doing a blog about which games to buy, but eh, I've put out  two today as is. People will get sick of me! That and I already own it lol.

Costume Quest is also available for iOS now Smile

The only one I've played is Resident Evil 4, but I like to play that every year around Halloween, even if it's just a little bit of that game. No matter what part it is, you're guaranteed to have a blast with that game, and I can count the number of games like that with one hand. I'd also probably play The Last of Us if I had the time to plow through it this month.

Yeah I play it everytime I go home and see my PS2 lol. The boss in the lake is still one of the best QTE boss battles ever. I always forget how atmospheric the game actually is too.

Posted on October 31, 2013 3:54 PM

The part in the lab is especially atmospheric. Those slow moving guys still freak me out.

The ones that regenerate? Fuck those fights were tense... the labes were kinda my least favourite bit though. I prefer the castle and village areas tbh.

Been wanting that Costume Quest for a while now. Maybe tonight's the night.

I agree with Amnesia. I haven't encountered my first monster yet and i'm already scared to continue. It really does a fine job with the horror.

Posted on November 2, 2013 7:36 AM

Oh yeah. Wait until you get to the water level. Tensest experience ever.

That looks like a fine list there. Like several others here, RE4 is the only one of those I've played, though I really like the Silent Hill series (played 2 and Shattered Memories) and hope to play the third game eventually. I recently bought both Condemned games for cheap and have a copy of Amnesia that I got from a Humble Bundle at some point. I always mean to play a scary game in Octobor...I just usually don't get to it (like this year because I was feverishly trying to finish SMT IV but got stuck on the final boss...eff you, Lucifer), though both the Silent Hills I've played were October games. And Fatal Frame 2 is up there on my mental list of games I'd like to own.

Posted on November 2, 2013 7:37 AM

That's fair enough. Amnesia is a game I suggest everyone play though.
