I spent most of Saturday at work, juggling regular duties and cleaning up after two games: pee-wee and a make-up senior varsity game. I was told the pee-wee game was the last of the season and I truly hope so. If there's anything that's ruined my weekends for the past 2 months, its those fucking pee-wee games. Granted, they don't make as big a mess as the crowds for the 7th, Junior and Senior games but they still provide a measly excuse to drag my ass up there. I'd rather finish everything on Friday.
There's one more home game for the seniors and it's on Friday. And it's Senior's Night. While most couples will be romancing and fucking, my single ass will be dealing with a gym that will truly be fucked up. Yay.
Either I was so exhausted after Saturday or was catching up on sleep that I lost but I slept through Sunday. I went to bed at 6 or 7 a.m. and didn't wake until 5:30 p.m. I'd feel bad about lost time yet sleeping that long also felt pretty good. Another reason I won't miss the basketball season.
As I mentioned in my previous blog post, I've dropped back into Red Dead Redemption. I'm working on the challenges and side missions mostly. I just love wandering around the landscapes in that game. I feel pretty compelled to buy some DLC for one of my games: Left 4 Dead 2 or Mass Effect 2. I'd love to play L4D2 online co-op but I'm pretty sure I'd be unlucky without all the DLC. Does anyone here still play L4D2 on the 360?
There was a special regarding a Grammy Salute to the Beatles but I didn't watch it. After all the books and the documentaries I've seen regarding that band, I don't think there's anymore to say, despite how much I love The Beatles. Also, having the Grammys involved makes it suspect.
I ended the night with two movie rentals. The first was Short Term 12, a great indie drama about supervisors at a foster care facility. Brie Larson plays a top-ranking supervisor who's excellent at her job, due to her ability to keep somewhat detached and level with the kids (since she's had an awful childhood). Her life becomes strained when a new teenager comes to the facility; this kid's problems mirrored Larson's as a child and it opens some old wounds. Well written and acted and never, EVER, once falls into manipulative, cheap drama tactics that lesser films would.
The second was The Spectacular Now, which is pretty much the best coming-of-age/rom-com since Say Anything. Miles Teller plays Sutter, a heavy-drinking but likable teen nearing graduation in school and he has no future prospects. He loves partying, getting loaded and living in the moment and this starts to change once he meets Aimee (Shailene Woodley), a smart, sweet girl who's unpopular but far from the ugly-duckling type. How their relationship challenges him to escape a life of limbo was heartfelt and convincing. There's a stretch where Sutter meets his absentee father (Kyle Chandler) years after he left the family and its such a painful but beautifully wrought moment thanks to Chandler and Teller. The cast is awesome all-around: Mary Elizabeth Winstead (one of the hottest older sisters in cinema), Jennifer Jason Leigh (who I couldn't recognize because its been so long since I've seen her in a film), Bob Odenkirk (aka Saul from Breaking Bad; his last scene with Teller is amazing) and hey, it's Brie Larson again! But this is really a showcase for Teller and Woodley, both of whom I hope have prosperous careers (Teller, I don't ever want to catch you in shit like That Awkward Moment ever again).
Sorry about work. I need to play RDR some time. I might have watched that Beatles thing, but like you said, it just seems suspect with the Grammys attached. "Hey, look everyone! We can still recognize this band name on our ballots! What's a Dave Grohl? Is he that angry red muppet that drums really hard? Well, hey, here's Paul McCartney!"
As for movies, I never heard of the two you mention, but sounds like you had a blast watching them. I saw Dallas Buyers Club last night and I liked it. Have you ever seen the Ryan Gosling movie Half-Nelson? Your indie movie discussion made me think of that one.
I haven't seen Half-Nelson since it came out but I remember liking it. I still haven't seen The Believer (which is the film that really got Gosling noticed) but Half-Nelson is what made me take notice of him.
I need to get around to playing the L4D series. I passed on it mostly due to the co-op nature of the gameplay.
