My question today is for the graphics whores inside us, but not for what a lot of people consider "good" graphics. I'm talking about games that are nontraditional, expressionistic, cartoon-like, or otherwise non-realistic in their graphical design.
For me, I'd have to go with The Wind Waker. From the vibrant blue waves, to the clouds of smoke that come when you destroy an enemy, this is one of the most beautiful games ever made. It was certainly made more pretty by the HD upgrade, but the base game will always look pretty timeless.
Another game I think is pretty timeless in its graphics is Super Mario World. Not as technically good looking as the NSMB games of course, but the way it looks will always be understandable and enjoyable by new generations of gamers, unlike some of the NES games and unlike some other SNES games. Super Mario World just looks perfect.
Runners up would have to be Valkyria Chronicles and Skyward Sword. I love watercolor looks, and I really enjoyed the graphics of these games.
So what say you? What non-traditional graphics do you consider the best??
Man I don't know. Games I'd have to mention are: Ori and the Blind Forest, Journey, Unfinished Swan, Splatoon, and Bastion.
Splatoon, huh? That's a pretty interesting answer. Does it really look good? I love how Wii U games look, but I never considered that one.
I need to buy Ori and the Blind Forest, heard great things.
It looks really good in motion. It's one of those games that if Bilby is playing I'll just sit and watch, utterly transfixed, because it's so aesthetically pleasing.
I've been lame about buying new Wii U games. No Mario Maker, no Smash, no Splatoon. I dunno why.
Killer 7 on Gamecube.
Okami
Hotel Dusk
I could go on forever. Agree with your picks, and I added the ones that come to mind.
shit, killer 7 looks amazing!
Okami, Wind Waker, Ghost Trick, Viewtiful Joe, really anything cel-shaded to be honest. But specifically Okami, since it has the Japanese woodblock look to set it apart.
I'd cosnider Super Mario World very much a traditional game graphically though. It's a bit too bare for me in places, particularly the backgrounds, but it definitely has a classic look that takes me back, so I can't disagree with your love for it.
I think Super Mario World has a kind of minimalistic, yet unique look that kind of stands out from other SNES games. That's not just nostalgia talking... I never had a SNES as a kid, and only discovered the game later. There's just a timeless nature to it that I think will last longer than the NES games. The music is great too. :)
I thought the music was great too, but not as great as some more ecclectic NES OSTs.
no, and it's repetitive too after a while. but there is some genius there. I just think they really escalated things after the NES trilogy, and I appreciate that.
I'm joining the cel-shaded bandwagon. Dragon Quest VIII and Ni no Kuni still look fantastic, to name a few others. It's more artstyle than graphics really. Good art will always beat technically good graphics.
yeah I love Dragon Quest VIII. Such a beautiful game.
Cartoon like or caricature like graphics are also traditional. Think of all the Atari games, arcade games, NES games, Genesis games, DOS games. pretty much every system up until the PS2/Xbox, and you see how dominant non-realism has been. And I personally think World is better looking than the Wii and DS NSMB, it's just not as technically advanced. The models in NSMB look like sterile plastic toys. They did nothing interesting with the modeling, shapes, or textures when they converted the Mario look to 3D, the lighting is flat, and the color gamut is a radioactive eyesore.
Anyway, outside of realism (including comic book/ illustrated realism like Street Fighter 3 or Starcraft), I like Donkey Kong Country Returns/Tropical Freeze, Super Ghouls and Ghosts, Day of the Tentacle, Frontier: Elite 2 (kind of cheating, but I like the style). And most recently, Transformers:Devastation. I want a game of every 80s cartoon done like that.
You've given me an idea to do a blog about games with my favorite cartoon graphics, (using the definition of 'cartoon' relating to humor and/or cuteness). It's a style that I have come to appreciate more and more, and it looks great in video games.
well, that's not quite how I meant traditional. I just meant non-realistic or trying to be photo realistic. Honestly, I like the look of NSMB, but like I said in my blog, there's just something about Super Mario World that is timeless. I like the designs better than other 2D mario games for sure, even if the new ones have "better" graphics.
Did you get Devastation? I love Transformers back then, and so did my brother, and I'm thinking of getting it for him for Xmas.
I did play some Devastation. If you're not hung up on length, it is one of the best action games you can get this year. For Transformers fans in particular, it is a must play.
Cool! Sold!
Another vote for Okami, plus Journey, DQ VIII, Child of Light, and the Ratchet & Clank series. Oh, and Ni No Kuni and Flower.
Child of Light WAS really beautiful. I'd like to see a 3D game that had that same style, that would be amazing.
I've always loved cel shaded graphics. I was even excited for Wind Waker when everyone else was like, 'ew, cartoon Zelda.' I think Wind Waker is one of the best looking GameCube games. I like a lot of other cel shaded games, too. And Okami was amazing.
A lot of people like Okami! And I've never played it! I'm lame!
I do love those cel-shaded game graphics. I really like Japanese art games like Okami and the Vanillaware games. Frickin' Rayman Origin/Legend games make my jaw drop too. There's so many cool art styles in games. It's part of the reason why I love this form of media so much.
yeah I was just thinking of that design of the old Jet Set Radio games. Video games are cool.
Definitely cel-shaded graphics. Still play Viewtiful Joe 1 and 2 occasionally and everything still looks pretty crisp to me.
you know, I've never played any of those. I really neglected my Gamecube.
The games that are my go to's are Auto Modellista on the PS2, XIII on the PS2, and Mark of Kri also on the PS2. I guess these games were the first I played that had the cell shading/cartoon look that was different from the other games I played on the PS2.
I've never heard of Mark of Kri. gonna google it.
