Dance Hall Crashers – He Wants Me Back (The Live Album Version)

In college I learned about Ska from folks in my dorm and I really liked the music and different from the two radio stations I listened to in high school, and what MTV played. One of my favorites from DHC is He Wants Me Back The Live Album version because of the energy. There is a different vibe on this version compared to the album version and it sounds like the band was having a lot of fun with this version because the tempo is changed, the harmonies are fun and that beginning guitar section starts it off on the right foot. It's a quick song that gets you going, plus how do you not like a song about when an ex wants you and you've moved on?

Quick Hits Time!

Chris Watches...

Training Day – CBS

I missed the first 10 minutes or so of the pilot and it started off a little funky but as the show went on it wasn't bad. There are a lot of familiar faces including Bill Paxton. The last time I saw him on TV it was on Agents of SHIELD, and now he's playing a rogue cop who partnered up with his friend's son who is a by the book cop (this sounds like a comedic flick) who are trying to figure out who killed the father all while I'm assuming taking down bad guys every week by any means. You kind of get the plot of one guy trying to keep the other from going too far into the darkside while the other tries to get the other cop to play a little dirty.

As for other shows Green Batman is getting good especially adding Dinah Drake, I checked out Superstore for the first time and thought it was funny (think Office-lite) and my usual list of Superhero shows.

Chris Listens To...

January ended and my goal for the month was to listen to 1,550 songs that haven't been rated and I ended the month at

1,876 tracks. I also added 930 new tracks to the library in the form of CDs and four mixtapes and loose singles. I am on a good pace right now and I'm finding more songs that I want to add to various mixtapes. Also while listening to my music library I found out that one song I bought from iTunes I already owned on a compilation CD. This isn't the first time this has happened to me but at least if/when I do decided to start ripping my CDs to FLAC I won't have to track down the album just for that one song.

Chris Reads...

I didn't fulfill my book a month goal, however if I finish the two books I'm reading now before the end of February, I will be back on track. I'm around 50% finished with both books so I could in theory sneak in a third book before the end of the month.

New Headphone Review

Last Sunday I saw that the base model of the AKG K series headphones was going on sale. I always wanted to try the AKG headphones and I figured why not try their budget line of studio monitors. Instead of going with the K52's I went with the top of the K series class K92 because it was going to be $15 more than the base series, and in a couple of days later I got them

I couldn't find any video reviews about them, and the folks at Head-Fi were hit and miss but for $30 (originally when I saw them they were $90, but have since dropped to $54 on Amazon) they were worth a try.

No frills packaging. Included in the box was that nifty packet of silica, the info papers, ¼ screw on adapter, and the close back headphones. There was no carry pouch because these headphone are geared mainly towards home/studio use but that didn't stop me from taking them outside.

The cable is non detachable and is about a mile long. I haven't unraveled it because like I said it is a mile long

The headphones themselves are light, and have that AKG headband where it is elastic and covered in a fake leather. The cup pads are also covered in a leather like substance that doesn't get really hot, and the headphones are light with no clamping force. The outer headband above the leather headband is made of metal while the capsules are made of plastic that can articulate to fit your head. The gold trimming isn't flashy, while breaking up the all black design.

At first I thought the sound was a little tinny, but as I continued to use them they started to sound better. Some folks believe in “burn-in” and it might make sense with these headphones. Since they are supposed to be studio monitors they have a flat sound, but this can be changed with your equalizer settings. My phone had no problems powering them but I did notice that I had to increase the volume to around 50% while outside, so if you have a music player with a headphone amp you should be fine.

The K92's sound fine. They kick butt for Classical music, and work well with other genres. Everything is clear, but there is some sound leakage especially when you get to higher volumes. If I would compare these headphones to the Status Audio HD-Ones I bought last fall, these blow those headphones out of the water. Now if you want to compare them to my other favorite studio monitors the Audio Technica ATH-M50s they have a darker sound and some of the lower stuff isn't as clear but again the ATH-M50s are also $100 more. I think if you compare the K92's to other close back headphones in the $50-100 dollar range it would beat many of them. AKG put out a solid budget friendly series of headphones and that sound good, the build quality is solid, and doesn't feel cheap. I've used them outside with my phone, tried them with video games, and both instances they work well. Sound was clear and I feel I got a heck of a steal at $30.

I went to a couple of other .99 Cents Only stores and this is a picture of 1/3 of the side of an aisle

This store just put out their stock and the cashier said they had more in the back. I also read online that some stores also have the Dr. Who sets so after I finished this blog I am out to check my local store.

I also saw some Skylanders Giants figures at the .99 Cents Only store but they are $2.99. If I see any Supercharged stuff I might get it.

Pickups

Games

You guessed it, from the .99 Cents Only Store

While I was stuffing a hand basket full of Diminsions packs a nice family ran over and their kids were also stocking up. I helped them find some stuff they missed and just like me, they all got two of each set.

Level Packs

I might get more because I like the Portal gun

Team Packs

I also really like the Ninjago figures and it would be cool to have a Ninjago army

I didn't count correctly and got three Scooby Doo packs. I think when the kids pointed it out to me I got a little excited.

Fun Packs

This pack I got at another .99 Cents Only Store. That's why there's another Oz Pack

So in two trips to different .99 Cents Only stores I spent the equivalent of one Level Pack and got all of this. I'm extremely happy and the only ones I am missing from Wave 1 is the Jurassic World Team Pack, Wonder Woman, Benny, and random Chima Fun Packs.

Alright Pixlpeeps I am off, have a good weekend!

That's all for now, more later!

-Chris

Dig ska.

Haven't watched the Flash in a while.

Good luck on the reading!

Posted on February 4, 2017 4:58 AM

At some point I will watch Flash and get over the fact that I find Cisco annoying.

Thanks! I read more of the Regan book today.

... We can't be friends anymore. I kid. I like Cisco. I get where you're coming from though.

I learned what Ska music was from playing an old PSOne game called Incredible Crisis.

My brother's girlfriend really wanted me to get the Dr. Who LEGO pack.  I may try to get it now that it's on sale.  Just have to find it...

Posted on February 4, 2017 4:58 AM

I'll have to check that game out.

I sent you a message.

ooooo nice ear phones.

One day when I'm a successful writer I'm gonna buy the fuck out of some legos.

Posted on February 4, 2017 5:00 AM

Thank you sir!

I started a bit of that but with NES carts way back. I hope you do buy a sh*t ton of Lego when you make it big as a writer.

I wish there was a 99 cent store for games. Can't beat the trill of digging through a bargain bin to find a gem.

Posted on February 4, 2017 5:01 AM

Wouldn't that be the best? The closest I've come is when the .99 Cents Only stores had stacks of XBox games but they were some poker game. I bought a couple, one to play, and the others as donor cases for some black box games.

Posted on February 4, 2017 10:31 PM

I take it these are some sort of item for a game? Kinda out of the loop on some things these days.

Posted on February 6, 2017 3:59 PM

Yep, its Lego's version of Skylanders/Disney Infinity. Most of the sets that are ending up at .99 Cents Only Stores are from Wave 1, and a couple from Wave 2. The original retail started at $12 for the Fun Packs, $20 for the Team Packs, and $30 for the Level Packs. Now I filled out my collection and I'm picking up minifigures/parts for my regular Lego collection.

A Portal level in Lego Dimensions sounds interesting to me. I might pick that up if I see it.

Posted on March 2, 2017 3:10 PM

Its a fun level and a lot easier if you have a flying character. I also believe that there is a trophy for finishing the level within a time period like five minutes.

Just organized my toys to life stuff. Still haven't cracked open Lego Dimensions.
