Castlevania: Symphony of...Netflix?

The animated Castlevania series on Netflix debuted Friday and my wife and I watched through it. Let me start by saying my expectations were pretty low. I mean, when was the last time you saw something based on a video game that turned out well? And it was by the studio that brought us Adventure Time...so this seemed kind of out of their wheelhouse. But the one thing that gave me some hope was that it was written by Warren Ellis. He would know what he's doing, right? Well I'm glad to say that I was impressed with the show all around.

The story is loosely based on Castlevania III, as in, it stars Trevor, Sypha, and Alucard. The animation is really well done. The backgrounds look really good and the characters are nicely detailed and expressive. (The first episode, in particular, is pretty graphically gorey and they're rather free with throwing out cuss words. So be warned, in case either of those is an issue for you.) By and large the voice work is quite good. What surprised me most, though, was how funny it was at times. Trevor, in particular, has a wonderfully dry wit. The "problem" is that the season is only four episodes long, and you can watch the whole thing in about an hour and a hour. It feels like a prologue to a larger series and, in a way, it is. Netflix has already renewed it for an eight-episode second season. So while I don't know when that will be coming, I'm excited to see where the series goes from here.

I fell asleep after watching it today and was oddly surprised by how gorey it was. It's honestly less kid-friendly than Hoc or OitNB in a way. Kind of. The way they made the Church a less sympathetic bad guy than Dracula was interesting as well, aside from the one priest Trevor asks to do something.

It does feel like a prologue though. It reminds me of F is for Family Season 1, which was 6 episodes long.

My wife, who covered her eyes a couple times because of the gore, remarked how ironic it was that they would literally show people's guts falling out but all the puking happened off camera lol

Tbf, there was SOME on-screen vomit in one scene IIRC. But that acronym does include the word "if ...."

I've never been a big Castlevania fan so I'll probably skip out on this.  This isn't Castlevania's first foray into animation, though.  Ever see how Simon Belmont was depicted in Captain N: The Game Master? :)

No, but I've heard Undecided Some things are best left in the past, I guess...

I really enjoyed the show. I wish season one had been longer but I can kinda see why its short. This show was either gonna bomb or be a success*for now* in the first few episodes. The soundtrack is on Amazon so I think that will be my next music purchase.

It just sucks that, presumably, it will be a while before we see season 2 since they just now gave it the go ahead

nothing like a stylized disembowelment.

What a terrible night for a binge.

Neat. I want to watch this, if I ever make time for watching something instead of playing something. I may see Spider-Man in the theater's tomorrow though.

You should! Like I said, it's only about and hour and a half long, easily less than one Minecraft session lol

I'll be watching this very soon and looking forward to it. I've heard that Dracula is a compelling character with dark motivations which make sense. Since it's so short it's kinda like watching a Castlevania movie.
