Could the Man Behind Minecraft Make Psychonauts 2 a Reality?

Notch to Schafer: Let's make Psychonauts 2 happen.

Tim Schafer, founder of Double Fine studios, wants to make Psychonauts 2.  “I would love to do Psychonauts 2, I’ve actually pitched that to publishers several times and no-one has taken the bait so far,” said Schafer in an interview with Digital Spy.

“So it is hard because fans often don’t know how the business works, with the difference between a developer and a publisher, it’s hard to explain that."

The original Psychonauts was released exclusively on the Xbox in 2005.  It has since made its way to the PlayStation 2, PC and most recently Mac.  While the mind-bending platformer was a critical darling, garnering a bevy of awards and solid reviews, it was considered a commercial failure when it first released.

“I’d love to do that game, but I’d have to convice someone to just give me a few million dollars, that’s all.”

What Schafer may not have realized is that his interview may have been his best pitch yet.  Markus “Notch” Persson, creator of Minecraft and the upcoming Scrolls, was among the many that read this article and responded to Schafer via Twitter with the following message:

“Let’s make Psychonauts 2 happen.”

While this is far from an official statement that a Psychonauts sequel is a go, it certainly bodes well for fans that have always wanted a sequel.   Would you be on board with a Psychonauts sequel?  Let us know in the comments section below!

I'm personally really hoping that this happens.  Even if it ended up being a DL only title I'd have a hard time not throwing my money at them for this game.

If I had a few million to throw around, I'd gladly give it to them. I don't think it's a stretch to say that I want Psychonauts 2 more than just about any other game that could conceivably be made right now.

Hell yea Notch is the man. "Let's make Psychonauts 2 happen" is all he needed to say to get me cheering for him and Schafer. Go all the way guys, make some momentum out of this, and put the money where the passion is.

Not to be the buzz killer here, but how are they going to market this?  I've been doing a lot of research on the dev / publisher relationship and, while a lot of it is money, there's a lot of 'who knows who' in there as well.

You're right Angelo there must be more to it than just Schafer having the dream to design the game and Notch having the money to make it happen. I don't know enough about the other components of the process. I'd make a terrible bussinessman. My idea of bussiness is to just make batches of awesome sauce. If Psychonauts 2 was to be a downloadable title for online services, there would be a whole mess dealing with contracts from Microsoft, Sony, Steam, whatever else. If it was a full console title it would probably be even messier.
