My Bit on the Death of Silent Hills

So the Del Toro/Kojima project is dead, what now?

The Series lost the thread for me half way through Silent Hill 4: The Room when it turned into a running away from things you can't kill game. They even took away your ability to return to your room and heal so basically unless you had saved up a gazillion healing items you were screwed.

There was a minor blip with Silent Hill Origins which I thought was decent. After that we had Silent Hill: Shattered Memories on the Wii which was a frustrating running away simulator made even more frustrating by the Wiimote and Nunchuk controls.

Then came Silent Hill: Homecoming which tried to add fighting mechanics to the game. Who thought that having to learn fighting moves in a Silent Hill was a good thing. Chop, kick , block, fuck you! Silent Hill is about creepy scares and exploration, not how good I am at quickly pushing button combos to defeat the monsters. The endlessly respawning enemies were a real treat too. I lost all desire to finish the game after a couple of hours.

When I started playing Downpour I thought, ok this isn't too bad. Then I met the vortex or the nothing or whatever it was. You were forced to run from this thing over and over again through labyrinths with many dead ends and no map, constantly dying until you memorized the correct turns and obstacles or got lucky. Sure guys, no one is going to notice you artificially extending the game with these pointless and frustrating segments.

So was Silent Hills going to be a return to form or just another attempt to make the series into something it should never be? I guess we'll never know but I wasn't holding my breath.

I don't know what to say.  I played through about half of the original game and dabbled in the PS2 releases, but never got any further in the series.  So, I wasn't all that excited.

Because I don't want to go back to your other blog to comment.  I have a copy of Eldritch Palmer and I think that I started it, but never finished.  I was drained by The Man in the High Castle and needed a break from Dick.

I read High Castle, Valis and Confessions of a Crap Artist one right after the other. I'm sure I won't have any problem with Three Stigmata....

Yes silent Hill has had alot of disappoints. However I firmly believe Toro and Kojima could have brought it back to former glory. P.T. gave me hope in that. For a teaser being playable it was great and showed that there was promise in this next installment. I know others probably don't feel that of course and that's perfectly fine. For me thou this is sad news.

I would have definitely given it a shot because I like Del Toro and the idea of Silent Hill. Also it was going to have Norman Reedus in it. That being said I probably would not have paid 60 bucks for it or bought a PS4.

It feels like Koonami has been doing some real shit stuff and this is probably what will help bring them further down, I don't want that to happen but they aren't helping themselves.

Yeah they are in a shitty place right now. I'm not impressed.

I think del Toro was the single best person to bring that creepy psychological focus back to the series. I was really looking forward to this game, so it's cancellation is really sad. Stupid Konami is probably making a stupid Silent Hill pachinko game instead.

Definitely made me laugh there Dafty. But it has a grain of truth in it.

I'm still sad that Konami bought Hudson and snuffed all their properties.

Yep that sucked too and now that there aren't any more Suikoden games do I really need another reason not to like them?

Another new-gen bummer. Either a game turns out to be shit, gets pushed back, gets stuck in limbo, or gets cancelled. Hopefully Batman and Metal Gear will deliver.  I think Witcher 3 will be a lot of hot air, with Bloodborne being the ARPG du jour for this year.

I just played Silent Hill 1. Loved it! I'm looking forward to SH 2. What's all these other titles you mention? Oh, am I behind a bit?

Just a bit. LOL

1, 2 and 3 are the best of the series. 4 starts off well but devolves into a frustrating mess half way through. Origins is worth playing. I played it on PSP. The rest aren't worth your time IMO and show that the developers just didn't get it.

Book of Memories of Vita was fun but your equipment keeps breaking. It really pissed me off so I didn't finish it. daftman and I were playing that co-op. If it wasn't for the item breaking annoyance, we might've finished it.

I have to admit that I wasn't too torn up when I heard Silent Hills was dead. I was more interested in why and how it died and what on earth is going on at Konami. Are they pulling a 1999 SNK thing or what?

I focused more in trying to collect the first three silient hill titles than even getting into the more current ones. Still can't find a copy of the physical game of silent hill 1 but I scored 2 & 3 finally.

I actually enjoyed a bit of 4 when I played it on the xbox. that is my next title but I am trying to get ahold of Origins on PS2 as well as shattered dreams even if the latter may not be worth it. once I do that I'll see about the last gen titles if only to round out what has become of the series so far.

It took me forever to find a physical copy of the first SH game but I did it. Somebody bought it for $45 on Amazon so I only have digital now. :(
