An objective of this exhange program i'm doing is to socialize and make friends, yet at the same time I just can't seem to accept any form of club partying and or any kind of disco, even if it's a benefit for socializing.

To make this clear, last week's Friday I decided to go to a party at a club, just because a Peruvian exchange partner invited me and they had been naging me about socializing and be less "closed", which I actually didn't complain much and I went by my own choice just to experiment.

To be fair, I did have a good company. Not only I went with my mentioned partner, but also another Peruvian (a girl more exactly) who was a nice person, a Canadian exchange student that just arrived recently and the brother of the family where my friend is staying at. I did had some good conversations and I did talk for a while with some people they introduced me, even if I was just answering questions about me. The rest of the party...... wasn't really good.

Ever since I discovered i'm not good at dancing and almost anything asociated with a club irritates me, I had what could be described as an okay experience, but boring for the most part, meaning that I liked the company, but I just didn't like the atmosphere, the loudness (music and crowd), and the music. Seriously, the only good song they played was Thrift Shop, and I was dissapointed that it was only half of the song and the DJs returned to annoying music. I pretty much did nothing except standing around. Atleast I left as early as a party could be (at 12:00 a.m.), since that was the hour I said to be picked up.

I also tried the beer (since the consent age there is 16, not 18 like in Colombia), but I think I need to get used to it, since so far Beer tastes very sour to me and not refreshing at all, which is why when I drank Cocal-Cola and water at the party, it felt like drinking the elixir of the gods.

But I think what really annoys me is my friend insistence to be relaxed and I would stop being "close minded" and get used to this kinds of things, and also to not pay attention to the rules of the exchange program (which don't allow for drinking, but aren't restrictive about it). He's a nice guy, but I call bullshit to all of that. I prefer to be "close minded", or as it's better to call it and more accurately, introvert. Ever since I was a kid, I prefered my own company. It feels relaxing and i'm able to be in my own thoughts and have peace of mind.

That's not to say I don't socialize, I just prefer other things. Like for example, I prefer to play games I did with the local scouts on Saturday, or have a walk in a city, I don't know, I think almost anything that doesn't have to do with clubing, and it might seem selfish, but that are also of my interest.

Just to make my point, I don't like clubs, I prefer to do other activities and be more introvert, and that's NOT a bad thing and it's not a sign of stubborness, and there's more socializing than that. You can't just change that.

Anyway, sorry for the kinda messy rant. I wanted to let out something I had in my mind.

You're so close minded for not enjoying the things I enjoy, Alex. How dare you not like the same things I do? I guess I'm just not close-minded enough to see your side of things.

As for beer, I only drink it socially, cause it does taste like piss water, at least in the U.S., but it loosens me up. I imagine I'd hate clubbing, too. I prefer house parties or getting together at a bar.

Hehe, nice joke at the first paragraph.

I would also prefer house parties and hanging out at a bar than clubbing. As long as I have a good company and good music by the side, I'm set.

I'm not a big fan of most clubs and bars either.  They're usually too dark and too loud, and if I can't see or hear my friends, what the point?  Plus I'm not a big fan of most alcoholic beverages.  I usually just drink water.  I'm boring, but I'm proud of it!

"I'm boring, but i'm proud of it!"

Agree.

hey man I'm with u on the club thing.  Not my style at all.  Not everybody is into the same stuff, and that's ok.  There's other ways to meet people and socialize.

I kinda hate when everyone says that because someone doesn't go to a club, it means it's a "boring" and/or anti-social" person. Guess what, there's other ways to socialize that don't involve getting drunk to Dance music. Not everyone wants that.

You got to have quality beer to get you used to the stuff. Blue Moon and Guiness were both really tasty when I first started even if all the Lites tasted like horse piss. I'm more of a hard liquor guy still though, but I'll never turn down a beer. Unless I'm driving or it's Bud Lite.

Like I said, I need to get used to beer, both quality stuff and cheap commercial beer like Bavaria. I had both of those kinds (quality stuff when I went to Brussels to a brewery and normal stuff at the party), but they all tasted like liquified sand in my mouth.

Honestly, I'm probably worse than you.  I don't like clubs or drinking.  I don't like the noise, the crowds, or being around people acting stupid.  I like staying inside.  I like playing games and watching movies.  Just hanging out at someone's house with half a dozen good friends is a nice time.  Hell, you don't even need a television.  You can just talk. Laughing  Hopefully, you'll meet more people that like to do the things you like.  I went from not having many female friends in high school to over 90% of my friends were girls in college.  We didn't play many videogames, but we spent many late nights talking and watching all kinds of movies. Laughing

That's not worse than me, that's exactly me Laughing

Yes, hopefully I can meet people like that here in Belgium.

I never really understood the club scene... but then again, I'm pretty introverted too. And by that, I mean I'm basically a hermit. Seriously. Sometimes I wish I could live on a mountain somewhere and grow an epic beard lol. Cool

Wouldn't mind living in a enviroment like that. I prefer to stare at trees than dancing anywayTongue Out

Yeah, I tried the club and party thing numerous times in college and I just didn't see the fun in it. I'm quiet enough as it is and having to yell into someones ear just so they can hear me doesn't sound like much of a way to help me with socializing. And really, most of the time some of my drunk friends will manage to get in a fight or make a fool of themselves, spoiling the mood for even the extroverts.

Posted on February 19, 2014 11:17 AM

Exactly what I think too. I just don't know how can people talk in a loud enviroment. I barely understood what people were telling me last Friday.

Posted on February 19, 2014 5:01 AM

I don't drink beer, I drink smirnoff wine coolers! Some people may laugh at me but damn it,at least my alcoholic beverage of choice doesn't taste like bitter fermented moose piss!Tongue Out

Nah, beer tastes more like liquified sand. I don't mind to try wine really...

I only saw the inside of bars/clubs from the stage when I played music. The few moments I had not being on stage were strange. You had to yell over the noise to talk to anyone. What kind of socializing is that? And beer is ok. I could take or leave it.

Posted on February 19, 2014 11:19 AM

I still don't know how can people communicate with so much loudness.

Posted on February 19, 2014 8:40 PM

It goes like this, "HI, HOW ARE YOU?" "WHAT?" "YOU LOOK PRETTY." "WHAT?" "I LIKE YOU!" "YOU LIKE FOOD?" "Never mind forget it." "WHAT?"

Posted on February 20, 2014 3:58 PM

There are so many different types of beer all with distinct tastes but then there are the big beer companies who supposedly make different beers but somehow they all wind up tasting the same, and by the same I mean like crap. :D

I've never been much for loud clubs, but I have ended up in a few. LOL

I do hope I can get used to the taste of Beer to apriciate it better. So far, both commercial stuff and high quality taste not like piss, but more like liquified sand in my mouth.

Posted on February 20, 2014 8:50 PM

You may not. A lot of people don't like beer, my wife being one of them. I grew up with beer in England. I think they put it in my baby bottle or something. I love the stuff.

Try some ales.  That might help.  Most macro-brews are lagers and have a specific taste that is hard to get away from.  There seem to be a wider variety of flavours as far as ales are concerned.  Some of the yeasts can impart a banana and clove flavour.  Some of the yeasts pair perfectly with coriander and orange peel.  The ones with coriander and orange peel seem to be the Belgium specialty.

that makes sense. I have the same issue myself in a sense when it comes to clubbing.

but first, disco? really? They still do that over there? Really?

anyway I'm with you about that to. Though I do think of myself to be a "pretty good dancer" I usually don' tlike to in clubs given how my dancing is more for DDR and random moments when I feel comfortable with my surroundings. That normally don't happen in a new area with strange people with strange music.

I woudln't sweat it with the "closed minded" comment. It's okay to be open and understanding but it doesn't mean you have to do EVERYTHING that everyone is doing. that won't make us individual people but more like collective sheep.

Stick with the coke, that's all good.

Well, Disco has also been used to describe clubs, so it's not really exclusive to the music.

I was never good with dancing and even with my love for Electronic music, I could never get into the kind of Electronic they play at those types of clubs. I prefer the calmness of M83 or the beat glory of The Chemical Brothers, or really, almost any Electronic music that isn't EDM and Bro-Step.

Agree, there's other ways to be open minded and everyone socializes differently. Just because I don't do clubbing, doesn't mean i'm an anti-social creep.

Still trying to get used to Beer though.
