Well what do you know, I got hooked into playing Minecraft even though I'd finished the achievements. I took a pitstop to delete a bunch of games off my hard drive but then right back to Minecraft.
MODOG here, the mind only designed for gaming. Doctor StrangeGamer and I teamed up for another session of digital disaster in an alternate dimension, ie. we played some games on Xboxes. Here’s the log entry for 07-03-2021.
Car was in the shop so didn't get to my friend's place til later on. Played only a few titles.
So, earlier this week Microsoft released their Xcloud service, which is a Netflix like streaming service where you pay a low monthly fee for “all you can play” games. It’s an extension of Microsoft’s Xbox Gamepass. But instead of installing the games on your Xbox or PC, here you are streaming them. The service is only available for console games for right now, and is available on PCs, Macs, Apple mobile devices, and Android mobile devices.
I’d like to say this year’s been better than the last, but it really hasn’t. Even though it’s improved, we’re still having to deal with a lot of COVID crap. And then we found out my mom had breast cancer late last year and we had to deal with the surgeries this year. Luckily she’s cancer free now, which is a miraculous and wonderful thing, and I thank God everyday for that. But man it sure was rough for a couple of months there. You have no idea. But anyway, around this time of year I like to make a list of my best games SO FAR, because usually the AAA titles are released later in the year during the holiday season, and the titles that came out earlier tend to be forgotten. So here’s when those games get their due. Keep in mind that this is my list only and no other outside opinions contributed. And if a game isn’t on this list, it either just didn’t appeal to me as much or I haven’t had a chance to play it yet. Ok with that out of the way, let’s begin!
This week I found a video game ad in The Spectre #19 from 1994. Here's a pic.
Microsoft Rewards wouldn’t open today so I moved on to the Game Pass stuff. Then I played from the bottom of my list of installed games sorted by file size. It seems generally that the smaller the file size the more casual the game. This also means easier achievements, and so I was able to retake first place for the month amongst my Xbox friends.
This generation of gaming has been all about reviving and re-releasing old classic games in the name of cashing in on nostalgia, errr, preserving the history of video games. Among the latest games to make a reappearance from the dead are a pair of 16-bit LucasArts classics, namely, Zombies Ate My Neighbors and its lesser-known sequel, Ghoul Patrol, in a downloadable double-pack on all the major consoles and PC.
There are many types of games, but what video games have still yet to rival tabletop games in is roleplaying itself. Western RPGS like Dragon Age and Divinity can tell grand stories, and offer players branching stories and conversation choices and a variety of ways to solve problems. But the essence of tabletop roleplaying – of creating and playacting a character of your own design, revealing their traits and desires though their actions, limited only by your imagination and the GameMaster’s leniency – is still very limited in video games. I’m not disparaging them; I’m just saying that playing a “role” is still in its infancy in interactive media, at least compared to tabletop games. I don’t know if that’s because it’s difficult to create video games that do this; or if games designers are just focused on other things – yes, it’s interesting to not be limited to binary choices and rigid solutions to problems and enemies; but what is less developed in games is the ability for the player to create and playact characters of almost limitless variety.
This is a games convention local to me here just outside Philadelphia, PA. It’s usually in a big expo center but this time it was in a Hotel with very limited space. There were no celebrities, no stage for a cosplay contest, and a very limited room for game playing with no arcade cabinets, only consoles. But it was better than nothing. I bought some stuff shown below.
We’ll finish out June with another batch of game reviews I’ve recently written over at GamerDad.com. Please click on the links and read as many as you can, and maybe even post a ‘like’ or comment or two. I’d really appreciate it. OK let’s begin!
I like to figure out a 12 part study of some sort to cover an entire year. This year it was all about history, and I was able to divide western history into 12 parts. I can't help thinking about next year already and one of my ideas is console generations. The only problem is that there are only 9 of them. So how to make it 12? Any ideas? I'll list the 9 I got so far.
So last week we had an Excessive Heat Warning for the entire week, which usually means everything outside is hotter than the surface of the sun. Happily I spent the week indoors with the occasional trip outside to experience life on the sun. During these non melting periods of when it was 120°+ outside I played some games including some new ones.
I am going through my installed games list on Xbox One from smallest file size to largest, uninstalling ones that I finish or just get tired of. I also added a few by buying them on a sale.
Hey folks, guess what? After many years of being denied a press pass into E3, I finally got in again! But then, this year’s show was only virtual, so I think pretty much ANYONE with a gaming site should’ve gotten a press pass. But I’ll make the best of the situation and write an article about it anyway! So here it is!
Games for sure but I also participated in Record Store Day and went to a PA Dutch Smorgasborg. There was a harvest of peas too and texting with a friend I haven't seen for a few years. What else? Think that's it. Here are details on gaming.
It’s been a long time since I’ve updated you good people, heck it’s been a minute since I’ve been on here. Currently in Southern California we are under a heat advisory because it’s going to hit 113° and there is no way I’m going to be outside…I will probably be outside at some point today. Anyways let’s get started.
I'm something of an anomaly when it comes to fighting games. Okay, I'm something of an anomaly when it comes to a lot of games. Anyway, a new version of my favorite fighting game of all time was released last week. I speak, of course, of Sega's Virtua Fighter 5: Ultimate Showdown, which came out on PS4 and is currently free to PS+ subscribers.
