Bloodstained

So I just backed Koji Igarashi's new game, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night on Kickstarter.  I swore to myself I wouldn't do it, not because I don't believe that he'll be committed to finishing the game or that it won't be great, but there is a slight chance that disaster could strike and I'll be out a hundred bucks and get nothing in return.  I chose the $100 tier mainly because it came with the Ayami Kojima illustrated slipcase.  She is the brilliant artist who did a lot of the designs for Symphony of the Night and some of the other IGA-produced Castlevania games, so I forked over the extra dough to get it.  It also included the soundtrack by Michiru Yamane, who also worked on many of the beautiful Castlevania tracks.  They, along with IGA himself, are the "holy trinity" behind some of the best Castlevania games, and the fact that they are all involved in this new game is a dream come true--once I visited the Kickstarter page, it was an inevitability that I'd pledge something.  In fact, I really wanted the art book from the $150 tier, but I wasn't sure exactly how nice it would be (size, pages, etc.), and I figured if the game was a success, I'd just be able to buy it later.  Anyway, hopefully I'll be very happy in 2017 (when the game is scheduled to ship).

In other good news, there's rumors flying around that Sony is finally going to show off The Last Guardian next week.  I hope that's true, though I've been disappointed after every Sony E3 press conference for the last 5 years, so I don't want to get my hopes up too high, but the fact that Sony hasn't shot the rumors down is making it hard to not get excited.  At least the new Ratchet and Clank game has been revealed, and it looks pretty sweet.  Here's hoping that E3 delivers the goods this year.

I would have backed the game but $28 USD (about 35 Canadian)is just too much for me right now and that's the lowest tier to actually get the game.

I wasn't going to do it, but after visiting the page and seeing everyone who was involved (including David Hayter!), I just had to give my support.  It really seems like they are putting a lot of energy into this project.  I'm sure IGA is thrilled after being mistreated by Konami for the last few years.  I was worried about game length, since the digital copy is $28 like you said, but supposedly the map will be larger than any of his Castlevanias, so it should be worth the money (I hope).

I'm also excited about the rumor of The Last Guardian. With my luck, it'll end up being a PS4 exclusive, though.

Yes, I think it will be PS4 exclusive.  I think technical issues may have been a factor in its long development cycle (Team Ico's inability to get it to run satisfactorily on PS3), but it's a shame that people who may have bought a PS3 just for the game may not even get to play it unless they buy a PS4.  Having said that, I really hope it's coming to PS4--I need another great game on there.

I have never backed anything on Kickstarter, but I've thought about it a few times.  Maybe one day something will really grab me, but not yet.

Yeah, me neither before this one.  I have mixed feelings about the whole thing.  As a creator, I like the idea of being able to get backers to fund my dream project, but as a backer, you're basically investing in something with no real return on investment.  Best case scenario is you get the product you paid for, whereas, as an investor or venture capitalist, you'd stand to make a financial gain if the project became popular, like the Oculus Rift, when it was bought by Facebook for $2 billion.  Both backers and investors took the same risk (obviously on a different scale), but backers weren't due any financial gains.  It just doesn't seem right to me.

I also am not impressed with how Mighty No. 9 is turning out (though I was never a huge Mega Man fan), especially considering the amount of money they made (and then they asked for even more!), so the thought did cross my mind that Bloodstained could similarly disappoint me when it finally comes out.  However, this is what I've wanted since IGA was taken off the Castlevania series, so I just had to give him my support.

I just backed Bloodstained.  I was going back and forth a fair bit on whether I wanted to or not.  I just want to guarantee that I will be able to get a physical copy of the Vita version.  I know that they say that they will release the games in stores after the Kickstarter, but I don't feel confident that the Vita version would actually make it there.

Yeah, Vita games aren't produced for very long or in large quantities, I'd imagine.  At least it's coming out on that system.  That's one good thing about Kickstarter.  They can offer Wii U or Vita ports as stretch goals.  Otherwise they probably wouldn't even consider those platforms.

It seems the fates of Pc and console gaming are more entwined than people thought. Certain kinds of PC games stopped being made because publishers thought there was too little or no audience for them. And so it went for console games. Crowd funding proved that the same certain kinds of PC games were viable. And now, so it goes for console games. Bloodstained, an "old school" action platformer, has now become the highest funded game on Kickstarter, passing the previous leader Torment: Tides of Numenara, an "old school" CRPG.

Basically, the old school console and PC gamers are on the same side, even though they enjoy different kinds of games.  They are not enemies, contrary to what forums would lead us to believe.

Console and PC gamers aren't that different.  They all appreciate great games, they just have different priorities on how those games are delivered (digital vs physical, 4k vs 1080p, couch vs office chair, controllers vs keyboard).  Some games just play better on a console, and some play better on PC, but there's a lot of overlap.  As consoles become increasingly similar to PCs, the differences between the two camps will disappear as well.  Then they'll just go back to bickering over hardware manufacturers.
