Square Enix Cancels Gun Loco

A PR email confirms the cancellation of the title.

After a string of postponements, Square Enix has announced the cancellation of their title, Gun Loco. The Xbox 360 game was originally slated for a 2011 release, but had a number of intermittent dates that were announced as the current year approached. Most recently, it was postponed to an unspecified date in the second quarter.

The game was a run and gun third person shooter with a setting at the edge of the solar system on a planet where the worst criminals are kept. Players were to embody one of the game's criminals and survive by hunting down the opposition in the anarchical setting. The game planned to support up to twelve concurrent online players.

It's not clear if the tragedy in Japan played a hand in the game's cancellation or if the product was not coming along as expected.

Wasn't sure what to think of this one, but it did at least seem interesting given its art style. Oh well, maybe it will be revisited in the future, or its assets hacked apart and applied to a different project.

In the end, Retro has delivered a solid new entry in the series, but one that doesn’t totally capture what originally made the series so compelling.
