Donkey Kong Review Rewind

More fun than a barrel of monkeys.

It all began on this day 40 years ago, in 1981. Nintendo- a then-obscure arcade machine manufacturer- had a problem with their latest game, Radar Scope. The machines weren’t selling as well as hoped, so the company decided to refit the unsold units with a brand new game. Young staff artist Shigeru Miyamoto was tasked with creating an arcade game that would capture the attention of the American audience. The finished product starred a stressed-out gorilla with an infinite supply of barrels who wasn't afraid to use them. It's the stubborn monkey himself, Donkey Kong.

Donkey Kong (Game Boy) Review Rewind

Witness the original arcade Donkey Kong get beaten into the dirt.

Please note that this review will not cover 3DS Virtual Console or Super Game Boy features.

I have a confession to make: I hate the original arcade Donkey Kong. Yes, sneer at me all you want, but I have good reasons for disliking it so much. While I have been very spoiled by Mario platforming adventures, his first battle with Donkey Kong is not something I eagerly replay. Note that this is coming from someone who enjoys games like Ms. Pac-Man, Galaga, and Dig Dug (notice a pattern here?); I will admit that the original DK arcade game has some sound elements that would set a benchmark for Mario’s debut, but with those awful jumping mechanics Donkey Kong isn’t a game I rate highly.

Nintendo Download - 06/16/2011

The first Nintendo Download that includes the 3DS eShop brings some heavy hitting titles.

Now appearing each Thursday, the weekly Nintendo Download update now includes entries to the new eShop found on the 3DS. Being the first week of the new format, Nintendo has made some tweaks to their format and have released some significant titles to make a big splash this week. Donkey Kong, originally released on the Gameboy has made its way to the 3DS Virtual Console for $3.99, while Mega Man 5 from the NES is now available on the Wii's Virtual Console. Gaijin Games' final Bit.Trip game, Bit.Trip Flux, can be demoed on WiiWare for a limited time. For more information on Bit.Trip Flux, be sure to read our review on the game.
