No More Heroes: Heroes' Paradise Review

“OK” just doesn't cut it this time.

No More Heroes looked like an intriguing game when it came out on the Wii, but after playing it I wasn't too impressed. You play as the badass Travis Touchdown and your simple goal is to kill everyone in your way until you are number one. The gameplay was interesting and the story and characters were entertaining, but these just sugarcoated a fundamentally flawed game. Upon hearing about this remake, subtitled Heroes Paradise, I hoped that it would all be smoothed over. Again I walked away disappointed.

A Plumber Saves an Industry - Mario Mania #1

Matt takes an extensive look at Mario’s first console outing, Super Mario Bros.

I have a pet peeve that goes along the lines of this sentence: “It’s good, for its time.”

Mario Mania: A Super Mario Bros. Retrospective

Matt takes an in-depth look at each Mario game.

You don’t have to tell me that I am a year late. I already know that. Mario’s 25th Anniversary has already come and gone, and Nintendo’s other big franchise is celebrating its 25th this year: namely, the Legend of Zelda. Yet you already know that by now, so you are probably asking this question right now: “Matt, what the hell? Why are you doing a Mario retrospective when you could be writing about Zelda?”

With Great Difficulty

What happened to "Nintendo Hard?"

I broke two controllers while playing Mega Man II as a kid. Specifically, I broke two NES controllers playing Heat Man’s level in Mega Man II. Even more specifically, I broke two NES controllers while doing the “Hell Blocks” portion of Heat Man’s level in Mega Man II. That particular stage summed up perfectly what the words Nintendo Hard really meant to me. You needed patience, quickness and the ability to predict the future. It also didn’t hurt to have a couple of extra controllers lying around the house, you know, just in case.

Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 Review

The commando returns for the sequel to the remake of the classic NES platformer.

The second iteration of Capcom’s Bionic Commando reboot once again takes us to the brutally difficult world of old-school NES platformers. Gameplay improvements and an awesome soundtrack await returning players as they precariously swing the commando from level to level. Technical issues keep the game from feeling too polished as a whole, but fans of the original may be pleasantly surprised as they play through the game’s many environments.

More Human Than Human

Traversing the uncanny valley

It was in the late 1970s that Masahiro Mori first observed what was later termed the uncanny valley. Through his work in robotics he noted that the human emotional response to his machinations would become more positive as they became more human in appearance and mannerism. This general upward trend in positive emotional response would continue until the robot achieved a level of near human realism, at which point the human reaction would drop off to the point of revulsion. The human reaction would remain in this uncanny valley and would only rise again once there was no discernable difference between the robot and a living, breathing human being.

Pac-Man & Galaga Dimensions Save Files Can Be Deleted

After some mix-up, Namco's PR has officially confirmed the details.

Last week, it came to fruition that Pac-Man & Galaga Dimensions didn't seem to feature the ability to remove the saved data on the cart. This news came hot on the heels of the announcement from Capcom that Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D didn't allow users to delete their progress after starting. Today, Namco has cleared up the confusion, announcing the method in which players must delete the progress on their game card.
