BaD 2017.10: e3 bound.

I guess I’ll just do a short life update for this edition of BaD, since I have a few small things to talk about since the last blog.

I took my lovely girlfriend Jenny out for our Valentine’s date on Saturday. She wanted to go to a book store, eat at Johnny Carino’s, and see a non-traditional Valentine’s movie. So I let her loose in Half Price Books (which is exactly like seeing Agent Paper in the anime Read or Die), and then we went to see The Lego Batman Movie before dinner.

Lego Batman was really great. I wasn’t sure if a movie starring Will Arnette’s Batman would be that good, because I felt like he was best in small doses in The Lego Movie. This movie was quite a bit more frenetic than the previous one, but I thought it was just as clever, and they went deep on the classic Batman references. I was hoping for some more connections to The Lego Movie than were present, but it kept the same level of wit and zany humor, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. My only complaint is that the climax is almost beat for beat identical to The Lego Movie, but it’s a minor quibble.

Sunday, we went to see John Wick Chapter 2. I didn’t think John Wick could get any more badass, but he totally did, and I loved seeing more of this secret world of assassins. It made me want a Hitman level where you team up with John Wick, but then Agent 47 is way subtler in his approach. Jenny and I loved this movie, and for my part Ruby Rose has become one of my new favorite action people. I saw her in XXX: The Return of Xander Cage, which is a big, DUMB action movie, but reminded me of Saints Row in its silliness.

Today is a big deal, because I secured a ticked to E3! They opened it to the public for the first time ever this year, and I decided to see if I could get in. I’ve been to the show four times already: from 2002-2004, and again in 2010. So I was there at the height of the swag bag and booth babe craziness, and also got to see what E3 has become in the years since the heyday.

I’m expecting this E3 to be more like the one in 2010, which means that I’ll be waiting in line for an hour to sit in a theater and watch the game devs play through a demo for the audience, but that’s ok. There’s a certain energy to E3 that I miss, and you never know who you’re going to run into. Back in 2010, I talked to Giant Bomb’s Ryan Davis and Vinny Caravella for a bit, ran into EGM’s James Mielke and Rez developer Mizuguchi san, and talked to Insomniac’s Ted Price for a few minutes. I met Shigeru Miyamoto at my first E3, and Phil LaMarr at my second, so it’s always a surprise seeing who is on the show floor.

I have my flight and hotel booked already. I need to see if Video Games Live is doing a show this year, because that’s always a great time. I’m excited, even though, if I’m being honest, you can get just as much (if not more) out of E3 by just watching the press conferences and trailers at home.

Wow!  I haven't been able to get a press pass into E3 since 2012.  Wait, you said they opened E3 to the public?  if that's the case it would probably be impossible for me to get regular tickets.  I imagine they would sell out faster than all get out.  Of course this would be the year that I'd have a chance to get into E3 when I really can't afford to go.

I went to E3 from 1997 to 2001, and then again from 2004 to 2006, and then from 2010 to 2012.  It was so much fun going all those times.  The stories I could tell...

And I saw the LEGO Batman Movie tonight.  It was very funny.  Now to review the LEGO Batman Movie Story Pack for LEGO Dimensions.

I never got to attend any of the parties or big events, but I have very fond memories of the big days of E3, and I'm glad I have 2010 as a comparison piece to what the show has become. I'm sure it's even more different now than it was then, but I'm looking forward to going.

Glad you liked seeing exactly the same movies as i did on the same days lol. I live HPB as well. How was Xander Cage btw? I was 12 or something when the first one came out and was interested but bad reviews kept me away.

Congrats on E3! I'd love to go, but as Cary said probably sold out and as you said i can get trailers at home. Video games live on the other hand I'd be willing to get in line for.

Xander Cage is big, dumb, and fun. I loved it. I think they're trying to do a Fast and the Furious thing with it, and I'd love to see another one, even though I hadn't seen the first two. I thought the action scenes were cool, and Donnie Yen is just so amazing.

Funny enough, the first two FF movies are the only ones I can say I've fully paid attention to while watching and therefore the only ones I've seen. 2 Fast 2 Furious was one I loved back in jr. high.

I recently watched 1-6. I had never seen them before, and I thought each one is better than the last. But my love of big, dumb action movies is well documented. I'm that guy who loves The Expendibles...all three of them.

I had two friends of mine go crazy telling me how they wanted to go. I wish I could. I'm just too money conscious right now. I'm still planing a summer off from work and that'll cost me a lot. I'm probably going to this comic con happening near me in a few months. A smaller affair to be sure, but something that doesn't cost me airfare and a hotel stay.

Saw John Wick 2 last night with a friend. I liked it.

Yeah, I'll be doing this instead of going to the Denver Comic Con with my best friends. We went last year and it was a lot of fun. I get to stay with them, so the only cost is the gas it takes me to drive to Colorado and food during the trip.

awesome man!  I can't wait to hear your reports of E3!!!!  Maybe inviting the public is just what that thing needs!

Yeah, I'm curious to see what it's like! I think back in 2003 the attendance was well over 60,000, but I heard that attendance has dipped below 40,000, so with the 15,000 public tickets available the actual show floor should have about the same feel as it did way back then.

Of course, now there are far fewer companies with booths, so I am expecting parts of it to feel very sad and empty.

maybe they need to open to more indie developers with small booths?
