BaD 2017.19: ready for giant bomb.

Since my earlier post about not feeling worthy of applying at Giant Bomb I have had a change in heart. I owe this in large part to the overwhelmingly positive feedback from people here at PixlBit, on Twitter, and my girlfriend. After I wrote that blog I woke up the next day thinking that I would never forgive myself if I didn’t at least give it a shot.

Over the past couple of days I have written, revised, and rewritten my cover letter and resume. I have significantly updated my linkedin profile, which was quite dusty after I began my last job. I combed through my reviews and listened to bits and pieces of Nerds Without Pants episodes, trying to see and hear them from the perspective of someone evaluating my work for possible employment. I compared what I’ve done at PixlBit to some of the content at Giant Bomb.

And you know what? I think I can do this. No, I know I can do this.

The difficult part, as always, is getting far enough to get an interview. I am supremely confident in interviews. In fact, I have landed every job I’ve interviewed for. The problem is setting myself apart from people who have that college degree and more experience with video production. While I have concluded that a college degree is not actually important for this job (the job posting seems to set the bar low for expectations), there will undoubtedly be plenty of people who do have that, so why would you bother looking at applications that don’t?

My last task before submitting my application is producing a five-minute video presentation. Since Giant Bomb has moved more into video content I need to show that I’m comfortable in front of a camera. I can already prove that I’m at home in front of a mic, and I feel that my writing is just as strong as the rest of the Giant Bomb crew. I’ll be doing this video and finalizing my application tomorrow.

I feel good about this. At this point, all I want is a phone interview. If I can get that, I feel strongly that I can make the next cut. Even if I don’t get that far, this application process has lit the fire under me to press forward with my video editing efforts.

What editor do you use? I'm currently teaching on final cut pro x. Lots of ppl love premiere though.

I've just started cutting my teeth on editing, so right now I'm playing around with a free editor called Shotcut. I haven't had a chance to do much with it yet. I've had conflicting information on what program is considered industry standard. I'd like to eventually be able to work in TV and movies, or even better, cutting trailers for game companies.

It seems like you were thinking of moving into Youtube stuff anyway.

It's definitely a goal of mine. I have video ideas in my head, and I have a channel name registered. I need to get some nice banner art and begin scripting.

I think that's awesome! I bet if you hadn't applied you'd always be wondering "what if,,,", so I'm glad you did that. That's the mindset I have right now.

Avid was industry standard for a while, but final cut and premiere are used more and more professionally now. Final cut x had a botched rollout ( there's a Conan video on it in fact) which led to premiere taking over their space recently, but people have come around on x a bit since the updates.

Truth be told, they all do generally the same things and it's mostly about what UI suits you and your needs. They each have their special features, but professional editors try NOT to go crazy with it unless the situation calls for it. They all have cutting, transitions, and text and for many things that's all you need. I would learn keyframes so you know how to play around with placement and if so inclined there's color correction, speed change etc. but the best editing is the editing you don't notice.

Thanks! I'm excited to get started. I love editing Nerds Without Pants, and I'd like to think that all the time I've spent with that as at least given me a basic understanding of things.

It's certainly a good launching pad. Most of the challenge you'll run into with video is the production part ( lighting, frame rate, etc.), but there's ac reason i teach classes video and audio editing in the same half of the semester.

What audio editor do you use for NWP?

I use Audacity, and I think it's what a lot of podcasters use. But I can't imagine I'd have a hard time learning another one with the hundreds of hours under my belt now.

Yeah, Audacity is the most popular free one. I vastly prefer mixing with Audition, but Audacity gets the job done.

Good for you. I always thought you had a good voice for radio on NWP. Good luck!
