Kevin's Retro Gaming Binge

After playing the Mega Man Legacy Collection, I had the urge to binge on retro games. I picked up a bunch with little regard for the quality I might be in for! Well, without any further ado, here are the games I played recently:

Mega Man 10

Because six Mega Man games were not enough in the Legacy Collection, I decided to pick up the one mainline-entry in the series I hadn't played yet: Mega Man 10. This is by far the easiest Mega Man of the bunch. This one was so easy, I managed to get the achievement of 'Beating the game without dying' in my second run. And I'm certainly far from being one of the better Mega Man players out there. I like them easy though, so this is actually one of my favorite Mega Man games overall, thanks to the near complete lack of frustration.

The Disney Afternoon Collection

I finished with these six games in a matter of days, thanks to the included rewind feature. Without it, I would have played these games even less. The Ducktales games can be easily beaten in half an hour each. Darkwing Duck is like Mega Man... if Mega Man had super annoying boss fights. Tailspin is the worst of the bunch, but even then, it's still okay. My favorite is Chip 'N Dale: Rescue Rangers 1. Boss Rush for each game was also pretty fun, but I do wish there were more challenges added to the collection. A good bunch of games, though not nearly as satisfying as I was hoping it would be.

Midway Arcade Origins

Not much to say about this one. It's a collection of 31 arcade games, 30 of which don't hold up very well for me. The only one I had quite a bit of fun with was Root Beer Tapper. This collection is not even close to being as good as Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection or Rare Replay, which are the only comparisons I can think of that I've played.

Mega Man Zero Collection

I've only beaten the first game and half of the second game of this four-game collection so far. It plays a lot like a more action-oriented Mega Man X. The vast majority of the bosses are really easy, where most of the time all you have to do is mash the Z-Saber to beat them. The few bosses that do require strategy are really satisfying however. Not as good as the mainline Mega Man or Mega Man X series, but still solid entries in the series. Mega Man is fast becoming one of my favorite game franchises.

All in all, I wouldn't say this experiment in retro games has rekindled my love for retro games. It just confirms my love for all things Mega Man, as those are by far the best of this bunch. I know there are lots of great retro games out there, unfortunately, most of these aren't part of them.

Unless I was playing Mega Man 10 on Easy Mode, I didn't find it that easy at all.  I feel the easiest Mega Man games are 2 and X.

I love the Disney Afternoon Collection.  I have better memories playing those games than Mario.  They should've just called it the Cary's Childhood Collection.  I'll be writing a blog about it in a couple of weeks.

I did play the game on easy, but the older Mega Man games make you restart the Wily Stages if you run out of lives, Mega Man 10 doesn't. Also, it's really easy to emass Energy Tanks and other items, with the in-game shop.

I have no childhood experience with the DAC games, so maybe those games would have had a bigger impact with me if I had played them in the past.

It's ironic that its a throwback to the awful American boxart of the early Mega Man games!

I wonder if I'd have as easy or as boring a time as you with some of these. I'm with Cary on 2 and X being easier Mega Man games, but have heard the newer ones purposely upped the difficulty because people have false memories of those games being harder than they actually are.

And I dunno, I enjoyed what I've played of that Disney collection more than you have, I think.

I'm not really rushing to get any of these either though, except I think I'd like Zero.

Different Strokes ...

Mega Man 9 certainly upped the difficulty, not so sure about Mega Man 10 though. They even have an achievement in Mega Man 10 of beating the game taking no damage. With some of the earlier Mega Man games that's just not feasible.

The DAC is good, but I was expecting something closer to the quality of the Mega Man LC (as it was by the same developers).

Those Disney games are short, huh? I'll wait to get them on a sale, I think.

Yeah, they obviously weren't meant to be played with the rewind feature. I can imagine it taking weeks to finish a game without it.

I missed out on all the Disney Afternoon stuff the first time around. My access to a NES back in the day was through my best friend who lived a mile down the road from me, and we were more into stuff like Zelda, Metroid, Bionic Commando, and Faxanadu. I did want to try DuckTales in particular, the closest I've gotten to that one is Shovel Knight. I played a game called Mickey Mousecapade on the NES. Hudson made that one.

I actually enjoyed a lot of Midway's games, especially Defender, Joust, and Root Beer Tapper. I've also played the original Budweiser-licensed Tapper.

For my part, I have a lot of classic arcade compilations from companies Namco, Capcom, SNK, and Sega. My big wish in retro game compilations though, is a collection of Nintendo's arcade hits, especially Donkey Kong and Mario Bros, which are both watered down from their arcade originals, and of course the NES version of DK is missing the Cement Factory level. It's just kind of mind-blowing that between these old games and home versions of more recent games like SF, MK, Virtua Fighter, and Tekken, that I have more arcade games at home than my local mall did back in the heyday of arcades.

I also missed out on the Disney Afternoon games. I didn't get to play much NES until my teen years and that was when the PS2 was already out.

I enjoyed Defender and Joust as well. Actually, I played those years ago and enjoyed them quite a bit more than I did when I revisted them with this collection. I was flipping through so many games that I probably didn't give many of them a fair shake. I also played a different, more low-fi, version of Root Beer Tapper a long time ago. I can't remember if it was the Tapper that you mention.

On the subject of a compilation of Nintendo Arcade Hits, have you played Ultimate NES Remix for 3DS or Wii U? It just might be the closest thing to what your looking for. It doesn't include any full games other than "Speed Super Mario Bros." It is basically a collection of challenges from Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr., Mario Bros. and various other NES games from Nintendo.

I don't know beating a game without dying is a pretty big achievement. I don't think I ever tried Mega Man 10. As for the Disney Afternoon games, shame about Tail Spin, I liked the cartoon and I kind of enjoyed the game. I do need to give that collection a try.

I might own Midway Arcade Origins, or at least the collection of games they had on the PS2. I do agree that some of the older stuff doesn't hold up.

Yeah, Tailspin is okay. The collection is worth a try. Even though they're short, six games for $20 is not a bad deal.

Yeah, I got the Xbox 360 versions of Midway Arcade Origins. And I can now say I'm not a huge fan of Midway either retro or non-retro games.
