Dungeon Magic

Released: 1993

Pitch: Four warriors venture into the world of magic to save the princess from an evil wizard.

While the premise of this game could not sound more tired and cliched, I actually liked Dungeon Magic quite a bit! It's generic DnD fantasy but it leans into that way more than I expected and in positive ways too. It plays a lot like a brawler but you have free reign to walk around the isometric screen. The four characters all play differently, which is a great boon to this sort of game, and you can level them up from collecting loot and treasure. What exactly those levels do, I'm not sure. I'm guessing you hit harder? Another cool thing is the level map, which pops up every time you enter a new screen and shows you where you are in the level and how many exits are available to you. It's nice to have choices on how to proceed! The gameplay, unfortunately, can get a little repetitive and the slowdown is bad if the screen gets crowded. I don't know how many levels there are but they are fairly long and involved. My five-year-old daughter and I played through the first two and enjoyed it but were ready to stop after that. I'd give this one a recommend though. The sprite work is really nice!

I love the character and enemy art in this game. I like these arcade brawlers too.

Kind of looks like some game I saw on Sega Genesis Classics, but that was made by Sega, not Taito.

It looks like a lot of other generic fantasy games! But it's solid.

Even though it was a repetitive beat 'em up, I still liked Dungeon Magic.  The isometric view and fantasy medieval setting helped it stand out.  I liked playing as Cisty because she wore green and that's my favorite color.

Data East made a simliar game called Wizard Fire, and it has the cheesiest intro ever!
