Let’s end the year with one last glob of game reviews I’ve recently written at GamerDad.com! Please click on the links and read as many as you can and maybe even post a ‘like’ or comment or two. I’d appreciate it. OK let’s begin!
Kirby Air Riders amiibo: Kirby and Bandana Waddle Dee
Kirby Air Riders was recently released, and of course I got it. I’m a big fan of the first game on the GameCube (and Kirby in general) and this was really the game that sold me on the Switch 2. And of course they have amiibo figures to go along with it. The first batch of them is Kirby on a Warp Star and Bandana Waddle Dee on a Wing Star. The cool thing is that you can swap them out of their rides and onto the other, kind of like Skylanders: Swap Force. So let’s take a look at them!
Sonic the Hedgehog Toys in Burger King Kids Meals
Back in November, Burger King was doing Sonic the Hedgehog toys in their kids meals. They’re not doing it now, as of this writing it’s now SpongeBob. But I managed to snag a few of the Sonic toys in November so I thought I’d show them to you.
Snoopy and the Great Mystery Club (Switch)
When I was a kid, I loved reading newspaper comic strips. And I still have a strong interest in them today! Some of my favorites include Garfield, Calvin and Hobbes, Dilbert, and of course, Peanuts. When I was little and a Peanuts TV special was on, you can bet I was planted in front of the set watching it! That’s why I’m really glad I got to review Snoopy & the Great Mystery Club! After Charlie Brown, Peppermint Patty, and Snoopy solve the mystery of his missing supper, they decide that it would be fun to form a detective club and solve mysteries around the neighborhood! Help them and the rest of the gang do this by talking to friends and collecting evidence, and even switching Snoopy’s personas and costumes to bypass obstacles. And you might even finally get to kick that football!
NickToons and the Dice of Destiny (Switch)
When I was young, I loved watching stuff on the kids’ cable channel Nickelodeon like Danger Mouse, Double Dare, and You Can’t Do That on Television (yeah I’m THAT old school). But even years later as a teen and young adult I liked watching Nicktoons like Rocko’s Modern Life and Invader ZIM. And once my little brothers came along, they were all in on shows like SpongeBob SquarePants, Rugrats, and Avatar: the Last Airbender. So I’m always happy to review a new Nicktoons game. So here comes Nicktoons and the Dice of Destiny, a crossover action RPG featuring some of your favorites. In the game, Timmy Turner from The Fairly Oddparents is playing a table top RPG with his fairy godparents Cosmo and Wanda. It’s a spoof of Dungeons and Dragons (they even call it Creatures and Caverns). Anyway, Timmy wishes he could be in the game for real, so with the help of some dubious magical multisided dice that Cosmo found, they are whisked into a fantasy world where other Nicktoon characters are sucked in as well. Now Timmy and characters from SpongeBob, Avatar, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and more must go on an adventure to find the magical dice so they can go back home as well as battle villains like Plankton and Angelica.
Samurai Academy: Paws of Fury (Switch)
Paws of Fury was a movie released in theaters a couple of years ago. I never bothered with it then, as it looked like a Kung-Fu Panda rip-off. But before writing this review, I did manage to watch the movie on Netflix. I found it interesting that Mel Brooks did one of the voices and the plot of the movie is pretty much the same as Blazing Saddles (I wonder if Mel Brooks had anything more to do with Paws of Fury because of that). Anyway, the game is kind of a spinoff/sequel. Hank the samurai dog must defend his town from ninja cats and other baddies while trying to figure out why the Shogun is attacking the village. It’s a 3D action platformer and feels like something that should’ve come out in the mid 2000s when movie tie in games were more commonplace.
Montezuma’s Revenge: The 40th Anniversary Edition (PS4)
Seeing as though I’m old enough to have experienced Pac-Man when it first came out, I’m pretty familiar with most retro games. However, sometimes one comes along that just flew under the radar for me. Montezuma’s Revenge was one such game. I remember seeing it back then, but never playing it. Many years later, at one of the first E3 shows I went to, they showed a 3D version and I remember the bouncing skulls, but that’s it. And now, 40 years later, we have a new remake of the classic game and I finally get to play it and review it!
I love how the title screen art for this game has a scantily clad Valkyrie riding a dragon in outer space battling a multiheaded hydra while a giant eagle looks on. And none of that is in this game. Except for the outer space part. Anyway, Schildmaid MX is a bullet hell styled horizontally scrolling shooter with a neat gimmick.
StarLightRiders: HyperJump (PS4)
This is a typical vertically scrolling bullet hell shooter with pixel graphics.
And that’s all for now! Thanks for reading my reviews and posting ‘likes’ and comments on them! I do appreciate it. I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and have a Happy New Year! Later! --Cary
