Jesse Miller's 8-Bit Brews Brought To Life

On 02/27/2013 at 05:55 PM by Justin Matkowski

Hey Everybody! So here are some concepts I was kicking around that were inspired by Jesse Miller's 8 Bit Brews. All Images were created using sprite sheets, and using fonts inspired by the 8 bit era. I wanted every aspect of the label to be 8-bit in appearance, so it would be true to the original inspiration. Props to Methane_Max for his Castlevania IPA suggestion, and to grimcanuck for his awesome "Kirby's Cream Ale" idea. Hope you guys like them! Here's a link for a larger size image

This is entirely too awesome.  Kirby's Cream Ale has got to be my favorite so far.  Fantastic job on this, man!

Thanks dude - Glad you like them! I could easily see quite a large and creative collection of these - there is so much to draw from. Keep us posted on how they are coming along!

And I would love to work on the labels for real, given the chance!

Double Dragon beer? WTF can I buy some? lol. Laughing  Awesome work Justin. The Donkey Kong one is pretty funny, and Kirby is too cute. Are you gonna do some more of these?

lol Laughing  I figured you'd like the Spin Kick Stout Aaron! That one and the Cream Ale are my favorite I think. Honestly they were a blast to do bud, and I will definitely do more!

These are really neat, the Kirby one is my favorite. When I was coming up with ideas I totally missed the whole 8Bit part, I was thinking about brews from current games which is great too, but the 8Bit theme is nice too because of the lettering and artwork you can do with it.

I still really want to see a Bioshock themed brew with the Bioshock lettering, and some flavor of the art deco, underwater dark creepy vibe with blue and gold color schemes. It's not an 8bit game but there's a lot of great themes and random ideas you could put into it or work off of for inspiration.

8bit Adam. 8bit Eve. BIOBREW. Would You Kindly. Fontaine's Finest. Splicer's Delight. All Good Things Flow Into The City. Bathysphere Brew. You could make the beer bottle look like a Vita-Chamber. Or have the backdrop of Rapture on the bottle with the lettering over top. You could work with the concepts of the Gene Tonics or Plasmids and how they boost your abilities or explore trans-humanism. Booze Hound. Electric Flesh. Electro Bolt. There's names of places you could work in. Neptune's Bounty, Adonis, Pauper's Drop,  I don't care, I fucking love Bioshock.

I'd have to agree; the Kirby one is my favorite too.

Those Bioshock ideas are badass! You could literally do a whole line based just on Bioshock alone - I think a 6 pack sampler would be awesome. I think I'll kick around some ideas for this!

I love those Bioshock ideas too.  Beer and bioshock...perfect combo!

I wouldn't mind drinking some Barrel Ale.

That one was a really fun to design - especially the concept of Donkey Kong partaking in his own brew a bit to much and falling off of his scaffold!

That Dracula's Curse one sounds intense, is it beer or absinthe? lol

Justin Matkowski Staff Alumnus

02/27/2013 at 07:27 PM

Dracula's Curse would indeed be some scary shit lol. Like wall-hugging, "you better pray stairs aren't having to be travelled" kind of brew.

02/27/2013 at 07:55 PM

Ha! Nice reference. "Ohhh shit, stairs, ok. Hold up, hold up, hold up... wait where are my keys? Dammit, ok, hold down, hold down, hold dow... oooh, a heart, wai... nooooooo!"

Justin Matkowski Staff Alumnus

lol! "When the hell did my stairs turn into the swinging/spinning level from Super Castlevania?!"

02/27/2013 at 06:52 PM

Mmmm, mmmm! Pass me some Dracula's curse in a shot glass, homey! I also can't wait until you get in some blueberry blast megaman wine cooler!

Justin Matkowski Staff Alumnus

02/27/2013 at 07:31 PM

lol Mega-Man wine cooler would be hilarious! Though I think something stronger would fit with the difficulty curve on 8-bit Mega Man. If brew strength = difficulty level, all modern game brews would be wine coolers, while brews based on the 8-bit classics would require you to sign a waver prior to purchasing. Walking down the street after downing a few Mega Man brews would feel like jumping those invisible platforms!

I remember I could beat any Mega Man game as a kid. But now I'm all grown up I fear going back!

They were no joke! Probably the hardest games I've played are Kaizo World 1 & 2; I'm thankful I played through them when I had my head shaved, because if I had hair it would have looked like a cat blew up on my floor.

Thank you! I agree - I might even do brew breakdowns by theme - a Kirby 6 sampler, Castlevania 6 sampler etc.

YOu know... I do brew my own beers over the summer <.< I may have to bottle that stuff up and toss a few erm..labels on it! but that probably won't happen until the wife and I finally buy a house this year.

Our Take

Jesse Miller Staff Writer

02/28/2013 at 09:16 AM

I'm sold on two brews so far....

1) Kirby's Cream Ale

2) Belmont Family's Barley Wine Ale

I'll be brewing the cream ale first and then start ont he Barley Wine so that it's ready by October (it'll require some aging).  If you want to work on labels for those two (if you have any changes on the first), I'll print some up and label some large formats.

Our Take

Jesse Miller Staff Writer

02/28/2013 at 09:40 AM

In regards to the "Barrel Ale" I think I would do a classic American Ale, aged in whiskey soaked barrels.  Believe it or not, this is something I can do - and it would be fantastic.

Justin Matkowski Staff Alumnus

02/28/2013 at 12:16 PM

I literally just thought of this, but a "LOZ: Oracle Of Seasons" line of seasonal brews could be really awesome...

Justin Matkowski Staff Alumnus

02/28/2013 at 12:05 PM

I'd love to work on the labels! I already have some ideas for the "Belmont Family's Barley Wine Ale" that I think will make for a really cool label. I'll build the full scale Kirby's Cream Ale label first using true label specs, and then start ironing out the Belmont Ale.

The whiskey soaked Barrel Ale is an awesome idea! Both in terms of taste, and establishing a concept that sets it apart from other ales in a very definitive way. Once the brews are ready and labels are on, I would definitely get the word out about these; between your brewing ideas, the niche factor, and the collectibility of them, I could easily see you gettting a shit ton of orders for these, seriously. This is how big things get started!

Definitely keep me posted on how they are coming along, and I'll keep you posted on the status of the labels. Thanks again Jesse!

I'm with you on the Oracle of Seasons, brews.  It offers tons of possibilities.  Unfortunately I can't sell any of my homebrew - it's against state and federal law.  Perhaps when I open my own nano brewery.

On a side note, I can absolutely give my brews away.  Keep this in mind everybodyCool

Justin Matkowski Staff Alumnus

I hear you with the state law thing; beer, spirits, and wine laws here in PA are all types of weird! If you open you're own nano brewery, you got a freelancer right here who would absolutely love some more collaboration! Can't wait to get started on the Kirby and Castlevania labels, bud!

Those are pretty sweet!  I'm digging the label for Dracula's Curse, not that I'm biased or anything, and would definitely give DK's Barrel Ale a go.  Nice job.

Justin Matkowski Staff Alumnus

02/28/2013 at 12:10 PM

Thanks man! The concept for the Castlevania brew is brilliant, and that was all you. It just fits the Castlevania vibe so well; it could be cool if every label had a little quote on the back of the bottle of the nonsensical advice that town's folk would give you in Simon's Quest - ex: "A flame is on top of the 6th tree in Denis Woods."

This is incredible and I'm totally stealing the idea when I make my next batch of beer, lol. I won't post it or anything and steal the thunder, too. Promise! I've been making a lot of wine lately, and I have a wheat ale that really needs to get brewed.

Justin Matkowski Staff Alumnus

Glad you like them! A tongue-in-cheek "Honey'd Words" Skyrim Wine would be really cool...keep us posted on how the brews are coming along!

6.6%...  that IPA is a weakling.  No offense.

Justin Matkowski Staff Alumnus

02/28/2013 at 02:05 PM

None taken. Honestly I just tacked on ABR values - my focus was conveying the concept of 8 bit brews moreso than establishing accurate alcholic content.

transmet2033

02/28/2013 at 03:37 PM

Tallgrass Brewing Company has an 8bit pale ale.  I juste remembered that I had it a couple of months ago.

Justin Matkowski Staff Alumnus

02/28/2013 at 03:58 PM

Just checked that out! Thought the Youtube vid they created was a great idea, although it would have been a whole hell of a lot cooler and more effective if they actually created a demo of an 8 bit game based on their brew.

What did you think of the ale?

transmet2033

02/28/2013 at 04:59 PM

I think that it was pretty good.  I have had quite a few great beers since then and cant quite remember.

i do like the designs, they are pretty neat.
