Introductory Blog

Hi my name is Cary and since this is my first blog on this site, I figure I’d start with a bit of an introduction.  First and foremost, it should go without saying that ever since I put a quarter in a Pac-Man arcade machine back in the early 80’s, I’ve enjoyed playing video games ever since.  I think the one thing I enjoy more than playing video games is writing about them, so I’ve been reviewing games for various print and web sites for the past 15 or so years.

Of course, reviewing games doesn’t pay the bills, so during the day I work customer service at a place that sells wholesale supplies to mostly hospital gift shops (and prior to that I worked at a church).  But long before that, when I was in college, I didn’t know what I was going to major in initially.  After my first year of college, I saw an ad in The Dallas Morning News, the local newspaper, calling for free-lance game reviewers for their new technology section.  I got the job, and after that I thought, “Well that was easy, I think I’ll major in Journalism!”

I worked at the newspaper from about 1996 to 2001.  When my editor moved to another section and the dot com bubble burst, I lost that writing gig.  But a year or two later, I started writing at the long-running GamerDad.com web site, and I’ve been there ever since!  I’ve dabbled in a few other newspapers and web sites over the years, but those are my two main outlets.

So what brings me here?  Well, while I love writing for the GamerDad.com web site, I try to keep a more professional attitude there and present my ‘best self.’  But sometimes I like to relax a little and be a little more silly when I write about video games, so I enjoy writing blogs and comments on other sites for fun.

In the late 90s when the Internet was just getting popular, blog sites were not as common.  People mostly posted on message boards.  During this time, I mostly posted on a message board called Pac-Chat.  We talked about Pac-Man and other classic games, and sometimes new games, too.  After a few years, more and more people joined Pac-Chat.  And it’s amazing how just one person can ruin a message board.  But that’s just what happened.  It was about that time that personal blog sites starting springing up, and a good friend of mine on Pac-Chat suggested I join 1up.com, a new site from EGM that just started up a few months prior.

So for many, many years I posted blogs at 1up.com.  I really enjoyed that site and met a lot of great people there.  So I was very sad when I heard the news that it was going to be shut down.  I had been there for nearly nine years.  Where would I go?  Well I got quite a few suggestions, and after doing a bit of previewing I decided to try two other sites.  I’ve been reading news and other articles on IGN ever since they were a collection of smaller linked web sites called N64.com, PSX.com, etc., so I decided to try their blog pages.  And a lot of 1up members have joined PixlBit, and I liked the look of that site, too.  So I’m going to post blogs on both sites for a while and see which one I like better.  Sure I could do both places, but I’m pretty busy so after a while I’ll just narrow it down to one site.  And if I don’t like either of them, I guess I can try Giant Bomb.  But of course, I’ll always be at GamerDad.com!

Anyway, that’s just a little bit about me and why I’m here.  Some other tidbits about me is that while I like nearly all kinds of video games, my favorite ones are old classic arcade games like Pac-Man, and whimsical, silly, and quirky games in general.  Old and new.  I’ve also been blind in my left eye since birth.  In the comments section, maybe you all can give me some tips for learning how to get around this new site.  And if you already know me, maybe you can post some things about me that I missed so others can read them.  Finally, if you have any other questions about me and who I am, ask away and I’ll answer when I reply to your comment!  Next time on my blog, I’ll take a look at all the games on the Bit.Trip Collection on Wii, in honor of the recently released Bit.Trip Runner 2!  Later!  --Cary

Hi Cary! Good to see you here. There are a couple of blogs by PixlBit staff that are pretty helpful. There's a follow button on everyone's page that you can click to keep track of them, and if you click on  "more comments" or "more blogs", that will bring you to a page listing all the lastest comments and blogs. But I'm betting you've figured all that out for yourself already.

Cary doesn't mention that he's one of the nicest people on the internet. He also doesn't like vampires or zombies, but thinks ghosts are interesting.

Yeah it'll take a while, but I'll learn the ropes of this new site eventually.

Hey, it's Cary!  Glad you're trying out PixlBit.  We have posted a few articles recently to help with the big influx of users we're getting here.  We've had blogs around for a while, but now we've got a lot more people using them so our site director, Nick, is working hard to get things upgraded with changes happening pretty much daily.  Stick with us a while and let us know what you would like added to the site.  We welcome all user input.

Very excited to have you here!

awesome to have you here, Cary.  The feature set for the site is being worked on, but it works okay for the moment.  The staff is really nice and their staff generated content is pretty cool.

I don't know what else to say about Cary, but he's a really really nice guy and kicks the ass out of games you've never heard of.

Yeah I'm really good at sniffing out rare and unusual games.  Which is why I'm sad about maybe not being able to go to E3 this year.  I can find games there nobody else talks about.

My gosh I can't believe the welcome I'm getting here.  I feel like some sort of celebrity.  Hopefully not one of the Kardashians. :)

I do like to change my avatar from time to time, just for fun.  You don't want to see my real face, though. Trust me. :)  Ha ha!

Welcome Cary! You're a class act, I'm happy you've decided to give this community a chance. I didn't know you were blind in your left eye since birth. Does that affect depth perception or anything like that? Do you think that the blindness affects the types of games you enjoy or has made you more inclined to play certain types of games? I like studying a little biometrics now and then, how people play their games, and why people play the games they play. Finding out that your left eye is blind makes me wonder how it affects your gaming experiences and what it would be like to put myself in your shoes.

yeah I'm curious about that too.  I'll bet you can't see the 3D effect of the 3DS, huh?  That's okay, I mostly play with it off myself.

Cary Woodham

03/01/2013 at 07:19 PM

Yes, being blind in my left eye affects my depth perception and periphrial vision.  I can't see 3-D effects, so I always have the 3D off on my 3DS, and I don't go see movies in 3-D.  I'm also technically legally blind, so I can't get a driver's license.  I probably could fight for a limited license, but it really wouldn't be safe for me to be on the road with my tunnel vision. About the only other thing I have trouble with is balance (so I can't ride a bike or stand on one foot for very long), and sports where you have to catch or hit a fast moving ball, I can't do at all.

It's too bad you didn't know me prior, as my outlook on gaming Journalism was a lot more positive back then, years ago.

Well, go look at IGN and your comments there (one from me, "homerbundy"), and then look here.

Yeah, what did I say about IGN? Actually, I'm not sure I said anything at all. Well, the point is, while it's good for news, this site is WAY better for blogging and community lol.

Cary Woodham

03/01/2013 at 07:23 PM

Yeah I had trouble finding friends on IGN's page.  PixlBit is much easier.  But I'm going to give both sites a try for a while.  It's only fair.

Hi Cary. It's nice to meet you. My first video game experience was with Super Mario Bros. when I was a child. My love affair with video games has continued to this day. Anyway, I was never a big Pac-Man fan until I played Championship Edition DX. It's such a good game, and fun, too! However long you stay here, it's good to have you. Mostly, what I do is check out the main page to see if there are any new articles. After I'm done with those, I'll check out any new blog postings on the right. When I'm about to leave, I'll click on an advert to make myself feel like I'm helping out the site. heh
