BaD 2018: Week 1, Day 02 (Quick Hits)

Posted on 02/03/2018 at 01:05 PM | Filed Under Blogs

I've switched from Netflix to Hulu. All the content I liked on Netflix is going to Hulu, and Netflix is losing more content than it's gaining. The only thing on Netflix I would really want to keep it for is F is for Family, and that gets new seasons so sporadically that it isn't worth it anymore.

I'm really loving my Switch. I haven't been this excited about a new game console in ten years, but this is almost like when I first got my SNES, which was the first home console I actually had. Breath of the Wild is amazing, and one little gem I'm enjoying is the arcade version of Mario Bros, which has never been officially released before.

I'm rolling my eyes at Phil the Groundhog. I live in Arizona, and other than a couple of cool days, it's like summer never ended here this year. We were already back in the 80s in January.

Fantasy games were really a niche item back then. The only real mainstream success as far as fantasy games went at the time was Zelda. I've always liked swords and sorcery fantasy games, though ironically, I was never a huge fan of The Lord of the Rings.

How is Nights of Azure 2? I really liked the first game. I was thinking of getting the second game on the Switch.

That's true. And they actually willingly accepted Ms. Pac-Man at the time since it was making them a lot of money. It was all the later stuff like Jr. Pac-Man, Pac-Man Plus, and Professor Pac-Man that ticked them off. It's kind of weird how they seem to be phasing out Ms. Pac-Man now.

My first exposure to Pac-Man was actually through Ms. Pac-Man, as well as the infamous Atari 2600 version of Pac-Man. Ms. Pac-Man is a better game, but Namco seems to be quietly ignoring it of late. They haven't put it in many of their recent collections, including the Switch collection.

Did you ever play Jr. Pac-Man or Baby Pac-Man? Those games and a couple of others made Namco management mad and that's when they took the license away from Midway. Jr. Pac-Man wasn't as good as Ms. Pac-Man, but it wasn't bad. I never saw Baby Pac-Man in the wild but I have an emulated version of it through a make-your-own-pinball-table program (it was a hybrid video game/pinball table.) Namco's "official" sequel to Pac-Man was Super Pac-Man.

I spent more time with SMB3 than SMW. When I got my SNES, it came bundled with A Link to the Past. Now that game I played the hell out of. I still do. Surprisingly, I've never played a F-Zero game.

I also tried Super Mario Run a couple of times. Ended up going back to the console games. :)

I actually did that with Valkyria Chronicles 2 when I first got my PSTV, since it wasn't compatible at first. Sony did make it available for Vita/PSTV later on, though. But my PS3 yellow-lighted, and it was a 60-gig fatty. :(

BaD #2: Captain N's Most Wanted 3DS Games of 2018

There probably will be 3DS stuff announced, Nintendo says they want to continue marketing the 3DS through at least next year, and it sold really well this last Christmas. I want to download Metroid: Samus Returns, but I also kind of hope that gets ported to the Switch.

The only AC game I played is the first game. I kind of dabbled around in it, and I liked making Resetti madder and madder. I changed the little jingle that plays when you talk to characters to the Westminster clock chime. I thought it was pretty clever at the time. Maybe I'll look into AC again when it hits Switch, as you know it will.

What you described about AC: Pocket Camp is a big reason why I hate the mobile gaming market and don't play games on my phone or iPad. With the freemium model, the developers all intentionally gimp the game or make playing through it very tedious in order to try to get you to spend money. It's like you're paying them not to play the game. And they're all like that, because nobody will spend money on a premium title on mobile devices anymore once they've gotten used to "free" as a price point. EA is trying to do the same thing on consoles with loot boxes, I did try the iOS version of Tales of Phantasia a few years back. Even though it was a port of the SNES game, it wouldn't work without an online connection and it would get impossibly hard unless you bought power-ups through microtransactions. And it ended up being pulled from the App store six months later, so you can't play it at all now. I wish they'd just have released it as a premium port (or better still, localized the PSP version!)
