Quick Hits: Rules To Giving Out Candy And The Usual

Posted on 10/30/2015 at 06:45 PM | Filed Under Blogs

I'm giving out little bags of Cheetos to the kids this year, as I usually do every year.  You'd think the kids would be upset about not getting actual candy, but they get all excited over Cheetos.  They're all like, "Wow!  You got Cheetos?  Cool!  I'm packing this in my school lunch tomorrow!"

One year I gave out granola bars and I thought the kids would be so mad that they'd egg my house.  But nope, they were happy and excited to get granola bars, too!  Sometimes kids can be unpredictable!

What is Your Most Arresting Gaming Experience of the Past Five Years?

What is Your Most Arresting Gaming Experience of the Past Five Years?

"Arresting."  That's a unique word to use in this situation.

I'm glad I got to experience Journey, but it didn't wow me as much as it did others.  It's just a game about a ketchup bottle wearing a scarf walking through the desert.  Just joking, I know it's better that that, but it still didn't affect me as it did others.

Portal and Portal 2 really wowed me in the past five years.  I'm not big on the 'games as art' argument, as I'd rather games just be fun.  But this would be a good candidate for the games as art thing.  And it had good gameplay and storytelling, too.  And GlaDOS became one of my top five favorite villians almost instantly.  When I first saw the video where she comes back to life in the sequel and says, 'You monster," I nearly got chills!  Portal and its sequel are definitely one of my favorite games of the last console generation.

Did Sam & Max: The Devil's Playhouse come out in the last five years?  That was one of TellTale's best.  For a game based on comic book characters who revelle in immature humor, the game turned out very sophisticated.  In a way, it's too bad the creator of Sam & Max is now working at Disney.

Child of Light came out last year and really captivated me with its setting and 2-D RPG gameplay. I even liked it better than Bravely Defaut, another RPG that came out last year.  Right now I'm working on reviewing a 3DS game based on the cartoon show Gravity Falls, and it's made by the same people who did Child of Light, and you can tell!

And that's all i can think of from the last five year.  Further back and I'd be gushing about stuff like Katamari Damacy and Psychonauts.  --Cary

I know it seems strange, but I just have a feeling we'll be seeing Undertale on consoles.  I know Nintendo is pretty ticky about stuff like that, but they do have quite a big selection of indie games, too.  You'd be surprised.  I could very well be wrong, but after nearly 20 years of reviewing games, I have a sixth sense about these kinds of things.

Thanks for reading!

The cool thing about music is how vinyl records are making a comeback.  Last weekend I went over to a friend's house and listened to new records and it was amazing.

Yeah I like the designs in Skylanders, too.  The toys just seem to scream out, "Play with me!"

Please do!  I hope you come back and at least read the Skylanders review, as I put more effort into that series' reviews since it's a perfect fit for the site I write for.

RETROspective: Creepy Video Game Franchises

There was a cutesy chibi Japan-only version of Splatterhouse that came out on the Famicom.  Too bad we didn't get that one.

My Top 11 Octoberween Games for 2015 #03: Guwange

There was a third Pocky and Rocky game on the GBA called Pocky and Rocky with Becky.  Natsume just recenlty ported it to Wii U Virtual Console.  Not sure if the first two are on Wii VC, but you might want to check.  Also, when the Wii was the main Nintendo home console, a company was going to do remakes of Taito games, but Taito declined so that company went and made their games anyway without the Taito licenses.  So if you ever see a game called Heavenly Guardian, that was supposed to originally be a new Pocky and Rocky game.  I know a thing or two about Pocky and Rocky.

2007 Was Gaming Heaven

Posted on 10/28/2015 at 07:34 AM | Filed Under Blogs

2007 was a rough year for me because that was the first full year at the job I hated (and I still work there).  I'm surprised I even lasted that first year.  Family life was rough, too.  Nothing really bad or dramatic, but deifinitely more stressful.

Like I said earlier, 2007 was the year I got an Xbox 360.  There were enough games on it I wanted to play by then, with promise of more to come.  Pac-Man: CE was the final straw that made me cave in.  The 360 ended up being my favorite console of last generation, and I still play it today!

I named my Game of the Year in 2007 Super Mario Galaxy, but I really wanted to give it to Portal.  But, it was part of the Orange Box, which I didn't want to pay full price for since the other two games on it I had no interest in.  But once the game got down to 20 bucks in early 2008, I got it.  I wish I would've gotten it earlier, as Portal and its sequel ended up being one of my favorite games of the last console generation.  I REALLY like Portal games!
