Episode 158: Conspiracy Nerds

Posted on 08/15/2019 at 12:29 AM | Filed Under Feature

All the Mortal Kombat stuff was neat. I'm kind of surprised you guys were thinking about it. I actually did find the Chris Houlihan room during my second or third playthrough of A Link to the Past.

Stage Select:

My video game nemesis is EA... wait, that's not what you meant, right? Okay, my nemesis is those giant fish in World 3 of Super Mario Bros 3, the ones that can eat Mario instantly no matter how powered up he is. I freakin' hate those things and will often run out the clock shooting them with fireballs.

Cage Match:

You're kidding, right? Killer Instinct Gold is easily the best of these two mediocre N64 fighting games. I never did see KI as anything more than an off-brand Mortal Kombat, but I needed something to play on N64 other than Super Mario 64. It wasn't anywhere on the level of Virtua Fighter or Tekken, but it was something to play. It was a testament to how dry the N64 library was that CF 63 1/3 got a cover story in Nintendo Power. It kind of reminded me of how Nintendo was like, "Hey, we don't have Final Fantasy VII on N64, but we have Quest 64, which is just as good!" Anyway, KI Gold was okay, and they even had the best 3-D backgrounds in a fighting game at the time. The game itself just didn't make use of them.

Now there's a good cage match for next time: Quest 64 vs FFVII.

8 Bit Hell - Kid Icarus

Kid Icarus is pretty navigable. You go up or right, and the vertical stages wrap like the tunnels in Pac-Man. You just gotta avoid the bottom of the screen at all costs, even if the platform you were standing on scrolls off the screen. Hooray, cheap falling deaths. They even sell an item in-game that lets you escape one cheap falling death.

Wolfenstein Youngblood

I was kind of looking at Youngblood. I have New Colossus on Switch, and I enjoyed it even though I got stuck after a certain point in it.

I actually read unabridged versions of Greek mythology when I was a kid and got to read about all the lurid stuff. I think it actually got me even more interested. The Aesir and the jotunns from Norse mythology were even more bloodthirsty and bizarre than the Greek gods, believe it or not.  That's just how ancient religions rolled.

I enjoyed this game, but it was kind of rushed out. I think they couldn't figure out what to do with it. Still, I played it to the end. I got pretty good at platform jumping in this game.

The Game Boy sequel, Of Myths and Monsters, is one of my favorite Game Boy games of all time, and it's my favorite out of the series.  There were no more cheap falling deaths, you could travel freely through every level until you decided to leave. The last stage, instead of being an automatically-scrolling horizontal shooter, was a full stage where you could fly around and explore with the Pegasus wings. It was one of the first games to buck the trend of using the Game Boy for "lite" versions of NES games by being both bigger and better than the original game. It made me wish they'd done Kid Icarus on SNES the way they did Super Metroid.

Doh! - The Simpsons Hit and Run

I had this game on Gamecube. One of my favorite jokes was the Matlock Expressway in the downtown level. My favorite Simpsons game is still the Konami arcade game which had that Klasky-Csupo first-season aesthetic.

A few years ago I took my wife to Atlantic City for her birthday. Unfortunately it rained that day, so she didn't want to do the boardwalk, but we did go see Marven Gardens.

I'm gonna have to side with Mark on this one. I hate the games-as-a-service model. Games get pulled as soon as they stop making money, you lose all your games the second you have an interruption in monthly payments. I can see where people would like it, but I will support the games-as-a-product model with my dying breath.

Never really played either one much. I'm mostly interested because the people that made them made two of my favorite games of all time: Lunar and Lunar 2.

Three Cheers for the 3DS! Part 1: Downloadable Games

The only one of these I played was Phoenix Wright. Pity it doesn't get physical releases, but I guess it's something that Capcom is localizing the games to begin with. It's too bad Atlus and Sega don't bring back its medical counterpart, Trauma Center.

I never did do Street Pass much. But I would still get Street Pass content even at home for some of the games I had on 3DS like ALBW and Bravely Default.

Mega Man Legends 3 was one I was looking forward to. Mega Man Legends was the only Mega Man game I ever really got into. It'd be cool if Nintendo and Capcom revived it for the Switch now that Capcom is treating Mega Man a little more seriously.
