Star Wars: Ep. 9 and Time Travel

Posted on 10/22/2018 at 12:19 PM | Filed Under Blogs

Thanks. KnightDriver, there is some astral stuff in Solo but the film is also the most driven by identity politics.

The immense effort and wealth required to create the super fuel would promise that time travel would only happen every few thousand years. It takes a lot to build a star forge. And the fuel could only propel the ship a short distance in time before it is used up.

Suicide Squad- Hillary Clinton and Benghazi

The Benghazi suicide mission connection is symbolic, not a literal retelling.  One could also lump the Bin Laden raid into this metaphor.  It's the context of Waller as Hillary that changes the Squad into something deeper.

Clinton was overseeing an operation at the Benghazi embacy that was smuggling weapons to "moderate Muslim rebels" in Syria (aka ISIS) to overthrow Assad, but then the operation blew up in their faces when the terrorists turned around and attacked the embacy (likely with the very weapons that were being distributed to 'rebels').

Nintendo NX Revealed in Patent

It would be entirely optional for players if Nintendo implements this into NX (and I would expect it to utilize the camera bar used to track the controller so it shouldn't increase the pricing much).

1up's story: A prelude into our present!

Posted on 04/03/2015 at 06:30 PM | Filed Under Blogs

For me, the fall of 1up began from within the forums when they consolidated the radio forum into the general gaming forum.  It turned into a giant fight among the community with the mods taking the side of the general/news forum crowd, and many of the best posters and all of the game developers that were on the site just quit coming there.

Rebooting the conversation on feminism and games-writing

Posted on 10/19/2014 at 04:20 AM | Filed Under Blogs

"What's the difference between a journalist and an enthusiast writer?"

All of the feminism vs man-hating debate aside-- this question of journalism vs enthusiasts has been around for years.  For the most part, journalism in games does not exist.  Game writers mostly are just there to sell you crap.  Every system that launches is awesome in their eyes... until it ain't to the readers.

Anticipating E3

I feel like Nintendo is giving up on WiiU.  They are going to release their Legend of Zelda in 2015 and maybe throw some more quirky Japanese titles at us after Bayonetta 2 and Hyrule Warriors fail, and then they will be moving on to their next system (in game development) and then the WiiU will see a whole year with maybe one release before the next console launches.

Nintendo is determined not to make any change of course with WiiU to such a degree that they will just ride it until it is literally selling 20k units per month next spring and they are forced to release a whole new product.  The main reasons I feel they are acting so stubborn (refusing to release a sku without the tablet and refusing to create new Western second parties) are because Iwata cannot confirm that he was wrong about the touch screen/online gaming/asymmetrical gaming and Iwata doesn't want to confirm that gamers don't want a touch screen controller with their console (probably because the man is planning yet another console with a touch screen controller).

The Stance of XB1

Posted on 05/28/2014 at 05:15 PM | Filed Under Blogs

I just don't want an all-in-one product.  I don't want a DVR, I don't want more television-- I don't watch anything on cable as it is but Mad Men, Walking Dead, and the news.  I don't need a 500GB hdd (as if I'm one of those people that downloads movies or saves televsion (for extra sedintary non-activity in modern life)).

This has been a bad product from the word go-- and they can peel off all the DMR stank and Kinect, but its RAM is still divided like a PC with the OS devouring the bandwidth (making it uterly pointless to purchase instead of an actual PC where you can do work).

Microsoft is going to be about where Nintendo is now with the WiiU come next summer and that is not going to go smoothly with stockholders that are already wanting to put a bullet in Xbox.

In Defense of Halo

Posted on 01/05/2014 at 01:07 PM | Filed Under Blogs

Halo just went in too many bad directions as time went on: a) Too much focus on vehicles and getting away from being about shooting. b) Grenades were made weak to allow nade-jumping to get to spots. c) They screwed with the melee system in Halo 3. d) The weapons are like the microwave burriotos of guns in shooters today-- everything is generic, you get a burst fire rifle and a fully auto rifle, and you can't customize anything. e) The developers have tried to force Spartan vs Spartan upon players rather than embracing the unique qualities of the elites or brutes (and giving them different types of vision/visors). f) The series has not evolved or been made more immersive. It's become fan service for a limited audience and the brand has been milked to death with four entries and a remake on the 360. g) Other franchises have moved shooting forward with more realistic running, immersive impacts, heartbeat in the rumble, iron sights aiming, ability to go prone, leaning around corners, using camera spikes to watch your own back.

Xbox One is the Future

The only policies that are going to matter are the mandatory 500GB hard drive and the mandatory Kinect.  The rent on this console is just too damn high.

Why a First Person Metroid Was More Important than a 2D Donkey Kong

If there were ever a new 2D Metroid game; it should be developed by Oddworld Inhabitants.
