Sunday Question: "What is Your Favorite Video Game Movie??"

I'm going to cheat on this one -- my favorite video game movie is Tron. It's not an adaptation, but it's a video game movie, I think.  I saw it in a drive-in when I was a kid... I don't think when it first came out, but later. I really remember the color of it, and then when I was young I would watch it on TV and VHS over and over.  That kind of view of "computer land", informed me a lot, even if it is not realistic.  Growing up with DOS computers and even more basic technology, it was the promise of the future.

"I knew there wasn't a circuit that could hold you, Tron!"

I also like the second Tron movie, but I appreciate not everyone does. It's got a great soundtrack though.

I still have a great fondness of vector based games and graphics... there's just something about those colors and shapes, whether it's Tempest, or Star Wars, etc....  I just love that look, it's so damn beautiful.

What's your favorite video game movie?  Oh, and you can cheat like me if you want!

Indie Game: The Movie, if that counts. If you're talking adaptations, probably Mario Bros for the sheer lunacy of it all.

No that counts!  I haven't seen that.  Heard a lot of things though.

Watch it man, I think you'd love it. Even non gamers find it really interesting, and it's probably the only reason I don't hate phil fish.

Tron was a great movie.  I loved it as a kid and even though the newer one wasn't as good, it still made me feel like a kid again.  I felt sorry for that one lady in the second movie, though, because she didn't look very comfortable wearing that outfit.

Have you ever seen Wreck-It Ralph?  I liked that one, too.

Movies that are BASED on video games, well that's another matter.  I hate to say it, but the first Mortal Kombat movie was kind of fun.  I also really enjoyed the Prof. Layton cartoon anime movie.  I'd really like to see the Japanese live action Phoenix Wright flick, I don't care how bad it is.

it's funny about Tron 2.  It has those effects, but I think the most beautiful moment is the end when they are riding the motorcycle through dawn.

The thing I always think of in that scene is I'm sure the lady is saying to herself, "Finally, I get to wear some comfortable clothes!"

I like In the Name of the King. Probably because of Jason Statham.

I like him in Snatch, when his buddy is like "I got a gun"

and Statham is like "Why?  For za germans?"

Indie game movie is a must watch. It's very interesting and you get to see the drama and stress of game dev. Wreck it Ralph treated games with a lot of respect and was original too. Professor layton film was good too, and I'm ashamed to admit I've seen too may Pokemon movies, but my fav was Mortal Kombat!!!

I really need to see Wreck It Ralph.

Mortal Kombat, eh?  I kind of avoided that one, but that's two votes for it.

I just saw the Ghost in the Shell movie and loved it. There's a Playstation and PS2 game also.

That's a GREAT movie.  Been a long time since I saw it though.

Final Fantasy : Legend of the Crystals. It is an anime that came out in the late 90's and is loosely based on the characters and plot of Final Fantasy V. It fits on two vhs, I have not been able to find it on dvd as of yet. The voice acting can be a little silly but over all it is one my faves even amoung just movies. And when it eventually comes out, if they do it justice, the Borderlands movie. Is it cheating to like a movie that has not come out yet? lol

Cheating is totally fine on this thread!

Wreck-it Ralph is my favorite, it was kind of like Who Framed Roger Rabbit for video games. Other than that, my favorites are FFVII: Advent Children, Mortal Kombat, and Tales of Vesperia: First Strike.

I wasn't a fan of Tron, but I did like another 1980s video game movie, The Last Starfighter. I even had the prototype tie-in game Atari made based on the movie for its 8-bit consoles and computers that my uncle downloaded from a "warez" site in the 80s. Atari ended up dropping the movie license and reworking the game into Star Raiders II for its official release on the XE Game System.

I liked all the super-cheesy 1980s cartoon shows that were based on video games, like Saturday Supercade, H-B's Pac-Man, and of course the Super Mario Bros. Super Show/Legend of Zelda and Captain N.

The Last Starfighter!  Saw that in the theater.  Classic stuff.

I haven't seen Wreck it Ralph yet, but it's on my list.

I really want to say Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter but the flicks are so bad. Heck even that recent Street Fighter movie about Chun Li. I think one of the few video game movies I really liked was Tomb Raider. Its a fun popcorn movie, where the storyline is a bit flimsy, but tons of action, and Angelina Jolie.

yeah my dad watches those Tomb Raider movies.  Kind of silly, but entertaining.

This isn't going to be a popular answer but I really like the first Silent Hills movie. Due to his adaptation of Crying Freeman and (especially) Brotherhood of the Wolf, I became a huge fan of Christophe Gans. He was a huge fan of the SH series (especially the first two games) and the film feels like a balanced tribute and respectful reworking of the first game's plot. It isn't as scary as you'd think or want but its very atmospheric, beautifully shot and has plenty of disturbing moments.

I think my brother was really into Brotherhood of the Wolf and made me watch it once.  That was a long time ago though and I'm not sure.

I've never seen the Silent Hills movie, but it can't be as bad as those Resident Evil movies! Surprised

The RE films have its fans but they're far worse. Gans was a RE fan as well and he reportedly found them to be disappointing.

Wreck-It Ralph is hands down my favorite video game-THEMED movie. I do like both Tron films as well and Indie Game: The Movie was interesting (and short).

i'd say the Street Fighter II anime on PSX and the first Tomb Raider movie were my favorite adaptations.

Not sure what my favorite video game adaptation of a movie is ... Spider-Man 2 (Raimi trilogy, GCN/PS2/XBOX)?

hmmm, that's a good question.  I did really like the Super Star Wars titles on SNES when I played them.

Those were cool, but too hard for me at the time. SNES Toy Story was fun, but I always hated the RC car level at the end that inverted (actually I think more than just that) the controls.

I'm gonna look up a Wikipedia list of adaptations and get back to you, cause I'm curious now.

I remember liking Disney adaptations like Lion King and Jungle Book and stuff but I don't remember if they were good.

Lion King was also hard as hell on SNES. Jungle Book I don't really remember.

That's a good but tough question, mang! Though I think the 1st Silent Hill movie is a "worthy mention", I have to go with Mortal Kombat. It's not even a "great film" it's just me and my friends were hyped for that movie as teenagers and luckily for us it was rather faithful with the source material and did not disappoint us! Again, it's no "masterpiece" but it certainly was good for what it was. By comparison the SH movie  has more artistic value and I adored the loving detail that was put into the monsters. They also used Akira Yamaoka's songs so that's cool too!

I've never seen it, but apparently it's cool.  Doesn't it have Radha Mitchell in it?  She's hot.

BrokenH

10/20/2015 at 01:40 AM

Yeah Radha is in it and she's hawt as ever! Hell, even Edward Stark...ahem...Sean Bean is in it! Then there's Jodelle Ferland who did a pretty good job as Alessa. Oh,she's really hawt now too! Watching "kid actors/actresses" grow up just makes me feel like an old fart though!
