Late to the Party: Ratchet & Clank Future: Into the Nexus

My staycation was a resounding success in helping me relax and get rid of stress. I meant to do a lot of cleaning out of the cottage, and I did get a lot done, but what I really ended up doing was playing a lot of Ratchet & Clank and watching a lot of mindless action movies. And it was so good!

Anyway, on to R&C Future: Into the Nexus. I have very mixed feelings about this game. I enjoyed playing it, but it was very disappointing in many ways. And I will now count them for you.

  1. Too short
  2. No real conclusion to the story arc from the previous R&C Future games
  3. Not enough silliness in the weapons department
  4. The control scheme was completely different from previous entries, resulting in wasted ammo and several cheap deaths
  5. Plagued with camera issues and other technical stuff causing issues with being able to see what the heck was going on, resulting in several cheap deaths.
  6. No weapon or device to turn your enemies into animals or birds. Seriously, it's one thing I always look forward to in any Ratchet & Clank game.

There may be more, but I think that's enough disappointment for one blog entry. Again, I'm not saying it was a bad game, because it wasn't, it just wasn't up to par with earlier entries. In other words, I have become accustomed to greatness, and this was merely good.

The good:

  1. It was fun
  2. The grav-tether gadget was pretty cool
  3. Mr Zurkon brought his whole family to play in this game. Listening to Little Zurkon say "Little Zurkon needs no bolts. He gets an allowance and his allowance is carnage." never gets old.
  4. Other awesome weapons: the RYNO VII (obviously), the Netherbeast, the Nightmare Box, and the Vortex Grenade were my personal favorites. The Winterizer was pretty fun, once I upgraded it a bit, and the Warmonger was a pretty nice rocket launcher, it never had quite enough ammo for the horde you were attempting to survive
  5. The GrummelNet Jetpack in this game is easy to control. I just wish they'd had more places to use it than just two planets and the arena.5. The arena refills your ammo after every event, so you don't have to worry about spending your hard-earned bolts on ammo for the arena battles and can save them for that coveted set of armor that costs a million and a half bolts
  6. The hoverboots are back in this game, and again, pretty easy to control for the most part.

I'm trying for a platinum trophy in this one, because the only trophies I have left involve buying that last set of armor and playing through the game on all the difficulty levels. Seems easy enough, we'll see.

Casey, what were your thoughts on this one?

And now I have to figure out what game from the mountainous pile of unplayed and unfinished games to play next.

I wish I knew what was in your backlog so I could recommend something you could play.  Um, do you have Ys 8?  One of my brothers called Ys 8 "Jurassic Park: The JRPG."  So you might like that one.

Cary, I never know what I'm in the mood for, and I might start one thing and then decide ten minutes in that I'm just not feeling it. Something will grab me, it always does. But thanks for the offer!

I know I played this but I can't remember anything except a slight feeling of, "something annoyed or frustrated me playing it and I didn't finish it". I would like to try it again though. It's R&C after all.

Glad you had a break. I've been off work ahd in Oklahoma, but it wasn't exactly a pleasure trip, it was because my mom recently broke her shoulder. I still got to see my family. I brought my Switch and have been splitting my time between Pokémon Sword, Trails of Cold Steel III, and Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition.

I really missed out on these games.

Good you had some time off. From what you've said on Facebook, it sounds like a rough year at the park with all the people acting like assholes.

Good luck on the chase for the platinum trophy! I tend to jump around on games and I missed this one. At some point I would like to give it a go especially since I enjoyed the PS4 R&C game.

I liked this one but didn't love it. You pretty much hit all the right points, good and bad. The only thing I have to add was how bizarre the story was about those two characters dying and Ratchet's guilt where we never saw them much in the last two games. Like they can't kill Qwark off, but his death would have had meaning and weight since we spent so much time with him. Here you only feel a little bad because it makes Ratchet sad.

As for your backlog, if you have any Bioware game made before Dragon Age 2 or Pokémon game I recommend those.
