Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, my take

I deserted my Switch for the last month or so to play Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga on my PS4. I really enjoyed it, usual Lego game buggy issues, crappy vehicle handling, and all. I like having hub worlds to play around in along with the actual game levels, which Tt has been doing a great job with in the last several Lego games. Going to talk a bit about what I like to call the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.

The Good: Fun gameplay, all new levels for the first six movies, and the usual wide variety of characters with different abilities. The hub worlds were a lot of fun, a different one for each planet. The addition of Capital Ships was a nice touch, too. I really liked the addition of level challenges a lot, it added a bit more fun to the level in addition to looking for minikits. Kind of like mini achievements, really. Another improvement over previous games is the ability to buy hints for pretty much everything, from where to acquire ships and characters, to the puzzles in each hub that rewards you with either Kyber bricks, ships, or characters.

The Bad: The usual bad camera angles, several bugs that make you have to redo entire missions or levels, or watch (and in some cases rewatch) cut scenes, even though you ought to be able to skip most of them by following the button prompt on screen.

The Ugly: Too many repetitive missions, fetch quests, and escort missions. A perfect example of this is every one of the twelve capital ships need to be taken the exact same way. Shoot all the defenses, blow up a few small enemy ships, enter the ship, shoot some storm troopers, chase down the captain and beat on him until he surrenders. The other thing I really hated was that two of the minikits can only be collected by completing an in level race within a certain time limit. I suck at the races, it was hard to figure out where the next checkpoint was in 3D, and enemy ships were shooting at you the whole time you're trying to complete the race. Actually, that may be the thing I hated most in the game. The navigation system showing you to your next objective leaves a lot to be desired, too.

All in all, even though I had the most to say about "the Ugly," it was a really fun game and I certainly got my money's worth out of it. Especially since it only cost me about $20 after all my reward points that I've built up over the last several months at my favorite indy game store. Gotta love a rewards system that actually gives you enough rewards points to make it worth it!

I only played a few levels on Switch, so I didn't get to the hub worlds I wanted to see, but I'll get it on Xbox later. I like that you can buy hints to find minikits and stuff. Going to a walkthrough, though easy on Xbox, takes me out of the game, and so I don't like to do it much. 

I think I wanted a Lego No Man's Sky out of this, meaning, I wanted to jump in a space ship and fly in real-time to each planet to do the levels.

I usually get to review pretty much nearly every LEGO game out there, but not this one for some reason.  So I was originally going to wait and ask for it for my birthday.  But my brother Jeff has moved in with me for a while, so I might get it sooner so we can play it together like old times.  We did that this week with TMNT: Shredder's Revenge!

I like the idea of buying hints for pretty much anything. The puzzles in LEGO games can be so dang obtuse sometimes.
