Random Update 3-3-15

I'm still coming down off the high of finishing the Bradbury Mountain Snowshoe Series, not to mention my quads are killing me. I've got the fever, folks, I'm already planning for next year, and I found myself tempted to sign up for a six mile race in NH. I quashed that one, it's this coming Sunday and there's a 1324 foot elevation gain. There's no way I'd be able to do that physically so soon after Sunday's race. If it hadn't been for the elevation gain, I might've, though...

Listening: Lots of Clash, Midnight Oil, and Social Distortion being blasted from the inside of my car over the last week. That, and the NOAA weather station. I'm a bit of a weather junkie at this time of the year.

Watching: The first episode of the most recent series of Sherlock with Jason the other night. I fell asleep and missed most of it, but it was Netflix and I can watch again anytime. Also watching Claymore. I'd watched several episodes on Netflix and then it disappeared, but Hulu Plus is streaming it now. Jason also had some original Star Trek episodes running while he was here. We've seen them all multiple times before, but somehow they never get old.

Playing: Still playing Tales of XIllia 2. I've advanced the main story a couple of chapters from the last Random Update, but I'm really in no hurry to finish.

Reading: Same stuff as last week.

I've spent a lot more time writing and taking photos this past week, along with getting ready for the race, so I end up doing less of the other stuff.

Also, anyone who enjoyed my snowshoe racing blogs and found Jerry inspiring and would like to help him win a photo contest where the grand prize is a deluxe European River Cruise, you can go here, go to page 11 and look for the photo of the girl sitting on a curb playing accordian, and click the vote button. You can vote once a day through March 7. If anyone deserves a Deluxe European River Cruise, it's Jerry!

But Tami, there's a picture of a guy sitting with a panda on page one. I'm so confused. LOL

Voted for Jerry anyway.

Thanks, Peter. I know how hard it was to bypass that panda photo ;)

Some River Related Music for you

Going to see the Riverman, going to tell him all I can

Further and further from things that we've done, leaving them one by one

And I keep running, falling 'til I reach the water, run with me riverman

Really like the Nick Drake song. Never really been a fan of Loggins and Messina (maybe because my mom liked them...). Liked the last song, too.

I like a lot of L&M but mostly stuff like that song, Peace of Mind and whimsical stuff like House at Pooh Corner. Never was a fan of Your Momma Don't Dance....

Peace of Mind is a particularly heavy song lyrically and I like that. Lyrics like "There comes a time when your friends go blind, their words become disease. They'll threaten your life with the blade of a knife and set you down upon your knees". I can understand not liking them if they conjure up bad memories though.

The lyrics to Watching the River Run aren't as heavy but they're about the passage of time compared to a river's flow and how time can make us feel alone.

Nick Drake is one of my all time favourites. I used to have his entire output on vinyl and played it every Sunday morning. Keep in mind that his entire output was about 3 albums before he killed himself.

Sylvian is another one of my favourite writers. That song is so gentle and quiet but at the same time there's so much going on in there, especially with a genius like Fripp is involved in the proceedings.

Neat! Sylvan and Fripp! i noticed Trey Gunn on Chapman Stick and Pat Mastelotto on drums. That's almost the 90's era King Crimson right there.

I like that pic, and he got my vote.

I also believe your fever needs more cowbell Tongue Out Yeah that elevation might be a heck of a workout, but good for you already thinking about next year's races.

Who, the panda guy? LOL

Ranger1

LOL. We had a five-year-old in charge of cowbell at Sunday's race. She also was incharge of putting the sparkly stickers on the race bibs for those of us getting our Badass designation. Her dad's the race director.

Thanks for the vote for Jerry. You can vote once a day, don't forget!

Does Jerry visit Istanbul often? Great picture.

I do fine running in the cold, but I'm not sure how well I'd traverse through the inches of snow you do.

The first and third races were pretty easy - the trails were fairly well-packed and the snowshoes have cleats on them for more traction. That middle race was brutal. Ever run on very loose sand? It was like that. And those racing snowshoes don't work all that well when the snow isn't packed. No float, unlike my big wooden snowshoes. The temperature was also a factor in the middle race - it started at 16 F and was falling rapidly the whole time. I think it was single digits when I walked in my front door, and I live six miles away from where the race was held.

And I have no idea if Jerry visits Istanbul often. But yeah, it is a great photo.

If you keep training all year, by next winter you'll be racing up all sorts of mountains!  Heck, you'll just be able to pick them up!  We'll have to call you Super Tami.  Keep up the great work and I'll keep on cheering you on!

Cary, I'm planning on continuing to run with the trail runners all year. They do a summer "dirt" series at the same park that are 6, 9, and 12 miles long and start in July. They keep telling me that if I could do the snow races, I can do the dirt races easy. So, yeah, I'll be training all year long!

not a lot of reasons to listen to the weather here....  Tongue Out

Shut up, Snee.

that doesn't mean my parents don't do it though.  They've always watched the weather channel.  Still do.

I don't watch the Weather Channel. It's almost always wrong up here. I use the NOAA automated phone line or listen to it on the weather radio in my car. They've only failed me once in five years.

Oh cool. I was wondering how to follow NOAA.

Claymore is pretty intense. From what I remember at least. I had watched it a little ways back. I'd vote for Jerry, but I don't have a Facebook account anymore. I got tired of all the drama on there.

Ranger1

It's not on Facebook, Aaron. It's through a travel company's website, so no excuse now Smile

Oh ok. Well, I voted for him. I just saw that little Facebook logo and assumed you had to have a Facebook account. Embarassed

No worries. It's early in the morning for you. Just blame it on that. I'm just waking up myself and I've been up for hours.
