I loved Banner Saga but it took me a couple playthroughs to beat it too. It was worth it though. I havent played the sequels but i plan to.

I played the demo to Star Allies and I really liked it but i just cant afford every game i want right now.

it's actually built in the Unreal Engine, so I don't think it would work. It seems like it has retro graphics but it has very advanced and pretty lighting. Very cool all around.
I'm definitely getting that Ys game eventually, maybe when there's a drought.
