Earthbound is also available on NSO (if you have a Switch). I grew up with the game AND the player's guide, so I never had problems such as you described. But I get it. However, you REALLY should give Earthbound another shot. Use the players's guide if you need to, but I think every gamer should experience this game becasue of its story, characters, settings, and humor.
Hm, that IS odd. Earthbound is beloved by so many because its so weird, but at the heart of the game is a story about love, friendship, and loss. By the end of the game, it feels like you've gone on a real journey, and that you've overcome something truly incredible. It's an experience I will never forget, and Mother 3 came close to that same feeling for me. I'll admit that the game IS weird and nonsensical at times, but that also makes it memorable in many ways.

The original is not bad, but you should really try Star Fox 64, which is easily the best game in the series. It's on NSO if you have the expansion pass.
I actually liked Star Fox Zero, although I understand why people don't like it (the controls can be very difficult to get used to). What I didn't like was that the story was basically the same as Star Fox and Star Fox 64. The series as a whole has not been good, so the future seems to be shaky. However, I'm hopeful that Nintendo will eventually give us another game, but when is the big question.
The running out of energy thing is a HUGE problem. The FP sections are probably the best parts of the game because they're actually interesting, although they are too short. The whole game is very short, but it's also an arcade port.
The running section IS silly because they are sprinting full-force without getting tired. It would have made more sense if they jumped into vehicles, but I think the developers were too lazy to make vehicles imo
