Bulletwitch. Is it Retro Already?

Picked up Bulletwitch on the cheap today. It was made by Japanese developer Cavia in 2007 who also did the 2010 RPG Nier. Bulletwitch features a female protagonist who uses magic and shoots a rediculously large gun as if you couldn't tell that just from the title. But is Bulletwitch retro I ask myself? It's starting to feel that way. It feels like dipping deep into nostalgia given that the Wii-U has been released and the PS4 and XboxNext (or whatever it will be called) will be released later this year.

It's weird to think of this generation coming to the end. I played a lot of games last gen, but this gen was the most gaming I have ever done. I got so enthusiastic about this hobby that at one point I had to rescue myself from total fanboy insanity when I bought a Halo console and started to go for the McFarlaine designed controlers as well - phew, that was a close one. I began writing blogs this generation, watching game related movies, read game related books and comics. Gaming has basically taken over my entire social life and to top it all off, I recently thought about how I could get a job in the industry so that it could take over my work life as well.

I guess it all makes sense when you think about all the new things that arrived to enhance console gaming. This generation saw the start of true online connectivity for conoles. I got my favored online co-op gaming as I always wanted it when I was stuck playing split-screen co-op last gen. Smaller downloadable games became a reality on console like casual games from usually PC exclusive companies like PopCap, experiemental games like Journey and forays into nostalgia with games going all the way back to the arcades, like Game Room, as well as pinball with Pinball FX2 and Pinball Arcade. Indie gaming became a thing this generation with lots of small developers popping up to do games on the exploding platform of iOS and on consoles too - Breath of Death VII being one of my favorites. DLC became an expected part of a game purchase extending the life of a game months after playing it and games have become even more accessible with full game downloads available on PS3 and Xbox 360. Is disc media about to disappear we ask?

What's next for gaming? More online connectivity? More aps and nongaming activities on our consoles? More home console connectivity to our on-the-go systems? The disappearance of hard media with everything being distributed and bought digitally online? Smarter technology in the hardware that practically reads our thoughts as to what we want to play and when? Google Glass games? I'm not sure if all this will make me more involved in gaming or turn me off to it, but the future is definitely in my mind now and the current gen almost over.

this was a good generation.  hopefully the new machines will be backwards compatible so we will be able to continue playing this generation's games easily.

I don't know if I'd call an Xbox 360 game retro yet...  I hesitate even to call an original Xbox game truly retro yet...  but in time I suppose I will.

This was a generation when I got serious about gaming again after taking a few years off except for the occasional title.

Yea, I'm worried Microsoft is going to cut and run like they did with the original Xbox and give us very limited backwards compatibility.

From what I have heard is the 360 games should work on the new Xbox. I could be wrong on this though but that's something I read on the web they said was confirmed. The PS4 won't be able to run PS3 games but will have them available to purchase online in the future of the PS4s cycle.

Yea i actually cant wait for the xbox 360 yo be retro cause if i would have kept my games when the ps2 came to a close i woukd be loving life right now, but since i have a huge 360 collection which im not getting rid of that means more money for ps2 and the 720 games lol if thats what they call it.

I consider the generation that had the Super NES and Genesis retro, and even then just barely. I think it's cool that they are coming out with the cheap, 'retro' consoles that will play SNES, Genesis and Nintendo games all in one. What was old is new again.

What do you think of Bullet Witch? It got horrid reviews when it first came out, but it is cheap now, plus I have a fondness for games that other people trash. I really like Duke Nukem Forever and Golden Axe:Beast Rider, for instance. No joke.

Haven't tried Bulletwitch yet, but I'm hoping it will be some kind of stupid fun. It got pretty dreadful reviews when it came out.

I bought Bulletwitch a couple years ago and finally played it a bit last year.  It was an all right game.  I didn't finish it though.  I got stuck or something.

I really can't wait for the 360 & PS3 to be retro.  Just the thought of all those games dropping in price...., I get warm inside. Cool

I almost like sticking to the very first year of this generation because there are a bunch of games under $10.

I'd like to try that Bullet Witch game but never got around to it.

Considering that Bulletwitch looked and played like a game made on the PS2, I'd call it retro. It's an okay game, but it felt like anything coming out of Japan for the first couple of years this gen was stuck in the past.

I watched the trailer again and I agree it looks like a PS2 game. There's really only a handfull of games from '05-'06 that really have the graphics that belong in this generation like Oblivion and COD 2. I still remember seeing the demo of COD 2 running at BestBuy and being really impressed by the graphics. Then when Oblivion came out, that's when I pulled the trigger and got a 360.

Yeah, I'm the opposite, and have no current gen consoles. Might get a PS3 soon, but otherwise, I just missed out on a lot.

I might be doing the same with this comming generation. I'm not too excited at having to buy new hardware. I'm pretty happy with all the current gen consoles and want to really pick up a lot of stuff I've missed on the cheap. I did spring for a 3DS this year however. I couldn't miss Fire Emblem, Etrian Odyessy IV AND Luigi's Mansion.

I am so ready for the next generation. I love when this happens. Costs me a lot of money but in the end it's all worth it. I played Bullet Witch one time and really enjoyed it. Just started on Nier yesterday and I think it's going to be good. So many good 360 and PS3 games that will now very cheap and easy to find. Gaming continues to be something that everyone can relate to and get into. Except for those close-minded fools who still see it as a time waster for kids. Most of them sit on their asses watching hours of sports,so what the hell do they know?

As usual with me and systems, it's some killer game that gets me to buy them. We'll see what's announced at E3 this year for Xbox/PS/WiiU.

Man, I can't believe this generation is almost over. It could keep going for a couple more years and that'd be fine with me. I got my 360 at the end of 2010 and my PS3 a year later, so I'm still catching up. So many good games for cheap Smile

I agree. The system does not seem old to me and the games still look fantastic.

Bulletwitch's final boss took me forever to beat. He was a cool fight though! Also, what's up with beating the game on the hardest difficulty for an achievement worth ONE POINT!? ugh!

I liked this generation a lot though. The innovations sucked (Kinect, Playstation Move, etc.), but we still got some great games and some leaps forward in gaming. It's been good.

Those "innovations" are purely to suck in the casual gamer or mainstream consumer. They got us hard core gamers already, now they're going for a bigger audience and that means gimmicks. So what I'm saying is that I agree with you. I just wanted to add to the suckage.
