Full Ms. Splosion Man PlayBits

Posted on 07/15/2011 at 08:39 AM | Filed Under Feature

Just wanted to mention that this game seems like a definite improvement over Splosion Man, which I didn't find to be nearly as great as most people have stated. I'll probably pick it up at some point, though it might hinge on my ability to mute Ms. Splosion Man's horrible voice acting. Pop song references FTL.

Donkey Kong (Game Boy) Review

I absolutely love this game. Got it when it released and played through it countless times as a kid. It was originally my brother's game, so I re-bought it a couple years back and couldn't help but play through it again on the spot.

While Nintendo brought the series back with Mario vs. DK, that title doesn't stand up to this one. Even worse, they took it down the Minis route and ditched the gameplay started here. While the Minis games aren't bad, they're hardly DK '94.

I might grab this in virtual form for the 3DS, but I'm still on the fence about it. It's not expensive, but I already own the game and can easily play it on my TV via the Gameboy Player. I don't take my games on the go nearly enough to really justify it, but I'm still tempted regardless - yes, it's that good of a game.

Man, sucks that we lost the recording of this one. Felt like we had some good conversations that would've been interesting to listen to. Oh well, better luck next time I suppose.

Hopefully Operation Rainfall puts enough pressure on NoA to get these games to release in America.

Shadows of the Damned Preview

Another update for you guys. We've been making our way through the game and the enemy variety doesn't let up. Not only that, but the basic enemies don't have a simple identifiable pattern (like in the Resident Evil games), so they can be pretty tough to defeat if there are a lot of them on screen at once.

We've encountered some light puzzle solving, wherein we need to complete a number of objectives in a certain order to properly clear an area. Encountered a few boss fights as well and they were massive in size and a real blast to complete.

Oh, and you encounter this half human-half demon guy who's absolutely hilarious looking. He sells you stuff for the white gems that you collect. We've exclusively bought red gems with the white gems in order to level up our health and gear. Speaking of gems, you get blue gems for beating bosses, which both unlocks new weapons or improves functionality of existing ones. All the leveling up makes for a simple hook that keeps you coming back for more.

The only downside we've encountered so far are the constant points of no return. Often you'll find yourself in an area to explore with multiple paths, and it's never quite clear if the path you are on is the progression path or an exploration path. Once you progress to the next area, it locks access to the old one, so if you choose the wrong path, you'll miss a chance to explore and potential pick up important stuff like white gems, ammo, health, and in some cases, red gems, which really suck to miss.

Other than that, it's a really great game so far, that I am looking forward to playing some more of tonight.

Team Fortress 2 Now Free-to-Play

Agreed, Left 4 Dead was a much better experience. I'm guessing Valve must see a lot of TF2 traffic so it gets the most attention. I think that they prematurely released Left 4 Dead 2 and fragmented the market and lost the confidence of some consumers. I know that they already caught a lot of crap over that, so I'd guess that's the reason.

Interesting development. I haven't played the game in ages and didn't care for it much anyway, but I'll be keeping an ear out to hear how it changes the experience.

This looks pretty cool in motion. Doubt I'll grab it at launch, but it appears to be a neat game that I'd grab after a price drop.

Duke Nukem Forever Review

Yeah, no surprises here. I'm more disappointed than anything. I was hoping it would still turn out pretty good, but it's just a mess.

The thing that surprises me the most is that Gearbox has more or less admitted that they put very little effort into the game. They took the mess that 3D Realms had made and just cleaned it up for release. I guess that's a reasonable strategy if the game is actually good, but in its current state it would've only made sense to scrap what's there and start from scratch.

I guess we'll see where Gearbox takes the series in its next iteration, but this one doesn't imbue much confidence in me that Gearbox will do a good job.

I'm loving that Donkey Kong is available on the 3DS. I'm really tempted to buy it despite already owning the cartridge. We'll see if I give in to my temptation.
